i, ! MOUNTAIN PORTER MISSING. FATALITY FEARED. Yesterday Mr. T. E. Donne-, General Manager of tho Tourist department, received the following telegram from Lako l'lilcaki: — "George Napier, a porter, is missing. It is feared that, when returning from Ball Hntt yesterday evening with his liorse, ho foil off whilo crowing tho Horker River. His hat was found some distance, below tho .ford early this morning. A thorough search is being made." . . : Napier was engaged conveying stores on pack horses. t (bv telegiuph—press association.) A FATAL BOLT. Waftgaifiul, December 30. A serious accident occurred last evening when Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Coc wero driving down Durie Hill. The horso bolted, and both were thrown out of the trap. Mr. Coo was badly bruised and shaken, and Mrs. Coo was removed to tho hospital in an unconscious state, suffering from concussion of the brain. Later advices state that Mrs. Coo died at tlie hospital during tho aftprnoon. . DEATHS BY DROWNING. Dunedln, Decembor 30. Advice has been received to the effect that William Allan Brown, aged 19 years, was drowned in Wangaloa Creek, near Eaitangata-, yestorday. The body has been recovered. Napier, December 30. _ ■ A drowning accident occurred hero this ovoning. A man anmed Arthur Sutton, a storekeeper at : Onepot Gully, was bathing in the river near the ond of Carlylo Street, accompanied by ono of liis and two men • named Chaplin and Moore. After' bathing for • some timo Suttoiv got out of his depth. Tho others went to his assistance, but, being all unablo to swim, they could not save him. An alarm was given, and tho body was recovered some half an hour later, but lifo was _ extinct. Deceased loaves a wifo and four children. ' ■ • DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER, ' : Wangamil, December 30. A settler named James Campbell Connon, aged 78, was found dead in his bed at Westir.ore this morning. It is supposed that death wasa duo to natural causes. KILLED ON A RAILWAY LINE. Napier, December 30. A man whose name is at present nAlcnoirn was killed on the railway line between Napier and Port Ahuriri shortly after 10 o'clock this evening. He is behoved to be a sailor from ono of the ocean-going steamers in port, and to have wandered on to tho railway line, with the result that he was run ovor by tho train and both legs broken. SUDDEN DEATH. Wanganul, December 30. An old /man named James Connon, agod 78, died suddenly on Sunday night. At the inquest to-day a verdict of dentil from heart disease was returned. Taliiape, December 30. At the inquest on Thos. Thornton, aged 72, who died suddenly whilo unloading a truck at Ohakune station, the doctor's evidence pointed that death was duo to rupturo of an anourism of tho aorta. A verdict was returned accordingly. (BT IBMGBAPH-'SPEOIAI. correspondent.) Taihape, December 30. In connection with tho sudden death of Thos. Thornton, of Ohakune, it appears that the deceased, though 72 yoars of ago, was halo and hearty. His end,was quite sjidden. He fell down whila unloading a truck, and never, spoke or movod. Ho is believed to havo been a native of North Wales,'and has a marriod daughter and married son living there. It is also stated that ho;'has property at Whangarei. It is not loiown whethor ho has a wife living. 1
