Friedrich AVilhelm is 613 ft. long, anil can accommodate 425 first-class,' 338 second, and 1556 steerage passengers. She was launched last month in Germany. THE AKAHURA. The Araliura has now been running constantly between Greymouth, Westport, Nelson, and Wellington for just a little over two years, ami, under her capable commander, Captain Lambert, has proved a thorough success. When this up-to-date ship arrived and replaced the Waiinii (says tlio "Grey River Argus") an opinion was expressed that she was not only' too good, but too largo to work West Coast bars with safety. The managing director of the Union Company, who had tho Arahura specially designed for this particular service, dccidcd to give her a thorough trial, feeling sure that under a competent master tho boat would be suitable. This has proved quite correct. During tho two years she has been running she has only missed working tho Grey bar, owing to heavy sea, on four or five occasions—which is a record. The run from Grey to Westport is accomplished comfortably in four hours, from .Westport to Nelson, in a, little over eleven hours, and from Nelson to Wellington in seven and a quarter hours. This is good going, and the ship is well maintaining her' reputation in this respect. THE ELVASTON AT DUNEDIN. Tho Elvastqil,'-' which is making her first trip here, was built by Taylor and Co. at Stockton in 1901, and was named the Heathburn. Her present owners are Messrs. Harrison, Dixon and Co., London. Shortly afterwards she pickcd iii) the. south-east trades, which were attended by head seas, culminating in ft.moderate gale,' with vei'y heavy head seas. Rounded tho Cape on November 30, and experienced moderate to fine : weather until passing the Snares on Sunday,. December 22. On enteriug Fovea its Strait she ran into a dense fog, and, although she arrived off the Dunedin Heads about. 3 p.m. on Monday, had to remain hove to until Wednesday' morning boiore those on board could make certain of the vessel's position.
