THE BUILDING OF THE YEAR.
A RECORD. ' • , If building activity be any guide, to the advancement of a city, Wellington's placo as a living oipbodimont of progress should be n high one. A recent computation made regarding the, amount of money that was involvod in' building in Wellington—buildings within city limits, excluding residences— totted! up to a figure somewhero in . the vicinity or £500,000 sterling, which is • an onormous sum when the size of the city is takon into consideration. Not only has tho amount of important building been greater during the year than in any other twelvo months in tho history of Wellington, but, what is equally gratifying, tho class of buildings erected has been moro substantial. '■The buildings, mentioned, aro those that can; be .recalled without' reference to any authority; and by no mcans doos it protend to be a completo ono. The -heart of the builder 'has been glad ;for a long time in Wellington, valid there is no reason why it should not continue so, for tho building prospects seem to be brighter than ever. A few of -!tho new buildings assured and contem-. ■ plated include now Parliamentary. Buildings and General. Many other big buildings are to bo erected in Wellington during 1908, and others are " in the air," but, from the magnitude; of some of the works on coiir tempktion, it can bo easily seen that huilding will not bo dull in Wellington during the next , twelve months.
