COMMANDER APPOINTED. nr TELEGRAPH— VBE3S ASSOCIATION —COPmIGHT' London, December 27, Captain E. F. Gaunt, son of tho lata Mr. Justico Gaunt, of Victoria, has been ap-pointed-to the command of, tho battleship Majestic. The Majostic wns launched in 1595, having been built at a cost of .£910,382. Her displacement is 14,900 tons, and her indicated horsepower' 12,000. Captain Gaunt was born in 1565. He was educated at the Church of England Grammar School in Melbourne. . 110 joined the Navy in 1878, and became first lieutenant of tho cruiser Narcissus in 18S6. In 1898-99-ho was first commissioner for Wei-hai-wei and administrator of Liu-kung-tao, and lie received the thanks of tho Austrian and German Commanders-in-Chief for his services during the Boxer outbreak. In 1803 ho commanded' a landing pai'ty of H.lf.S. Mohawk, avenging tho death of Lieutenant Grabau, of tho Italian Navy, in Soniaiiland. In this expedition ho was badly wounded. He roceived the thanks of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, and the Italian military mediil for valour, and was promoted , to the rank, of captain. : ■ ' ■' ■ ; ' '
