THE STRUCGLE WITH LABOUR UNIONS. FIGHTING FORCE ORGANISED.. A private meeting of tho Farmers' Union was hold at Palmorston North 011 Friday for tho purposes of considering tho shearers' dispute. After discussing the position at considerable length, the meeting eventually decided that Mr. J. G. Wilson (colonial president) and Mr. Cooper (vice-president) proceed to Wellington in timo for the opening of the Conciliation Board sittings 011 December 31, and stato to the Board tho reasons why tlioy decline to have their case brought before Mr. Andrew Collins. Scheme of Defence. • Shoep-ownors within the Farmers' Union will arrange to have circulars sent to all branches asking that" meetings be held to consider tho situation, and adopt a uniform, defence schemo for the shearers' dispute and that of the farm labourers, which is expected to follow in due course. Should the ease come before tho Arbitration Court, an organisation, aa set up, will fight it jointly, but in the meantime it is prepared to meet the shearers with a view to arriving at an amicable settlement. The hearing is set down for January 17 at Palmerston. On Watch. Speaking to our Manawatu representative, one of the farmers stated that he did not anticipate any great trouble with the larm labourers along tho West Coast. The Executive for the Wellington l'rovinco had been watching' every movo for, some considerable time, and had its lines carefully laid.
