Instead of-pursumg a painfully slow process of damping postage stamps and affixing them to letters', thp jouths in most of the largo business establishments in Wellington now simply insert the corner of the Ictteis in a machine, tuin a handle, and then throw tho letter aside ready for posting Tho use of the machine which enables this to be done iv.is formally legalised by Act of Parliament last session, though prior to that a limited number of them wore in use The machine is, therefore, no strangci to tho Wellington public, who will al-o remember it as the intention of ft Christehuich gentleman It is interesting to note, however, its growing popularity A limit of fifty nn' placod on the number to be issued in the four cities, and already in Wellington and Cliristchurch this number are in use The cost of tho machines is £25 each, but the users aro entitled to a rebate of ij per cent on tho •, output Until recently onlj telegrams, and letters could be franked, but the Act above referred to legalises, the stamping of receipts Further than this, the adaptation of tho machine is not permitted Be Rides the rapidity of the machine, the absolute safeguard it provides against pilfering by dhce-boys assists to give it popularity Four times a month an official makes a round of tho machines and collects the returns' From some warehouses in Wellington as much as £5 a month is collected
