KAOLIN.
■ A 'quantity of kaolin, a species of very fine clay, found 'in tho-vicinity of New: Plymouth, was-,recently brought to Wellington, and, by permission :of ,tho authorities, experiments with it we're carried .out" at tho. Mount Cook kiln in the .mnnirfactu'ro of i fire-bricks, tiles, ornaments, 'fancy: articles, 'building cornices, etc. The result;; has'been crfliriehtly' satisfactory as far as■the'quality of the kaolin was concerned, notwithstanding" the' fact that tho Mount Cook kiln "'Was' not -altogether suitable. About 1} tons of the clay "was .worked up and burned, and the articles -turned...out havo been-'on exhibition during ; the lust two or. three days. Tho kaolin deposit wns discovered on a property, thrco miles from New Plymouth,. by Mr." S."IIill, Government valuor. Tho cliff wherein it bxists'.'has a face 60ft; high.' Altogether 'tb.er!! , are frorir 15 to'l6'acres of the deposit Specimens linvo been sent Itornc, and pronounced of the .finest, quality, and Dr. Macfaurin, Now Zealand -Government analyst, has also-confirmed, this, in regard to specimens, sent to lirm. .Mr. . Jaraicson,. who carripd out tho operations at Mount.Cook, found that he was able to turn out material" very much - liko lilack marble., Several other colours can also bo'obtaihed.
