CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
Ihe Wellington and. Wairarapa' District Charitable Board met yesterday .morning, a bare quorum .being present: Messrs. D. jU'Laren (in the chair),'F: Cohen,'and ,W. H. Morrah. \ The circulat- from .Dr. Valintirio, notifying that : a conference of members, pf Hospital and Charitable' Aid Boards would bo held next year- for the purpose of discussing the 'Amending Act to bo introduced "next' session, was ; -read;' -It was decided to defer consid- ; eration;-of-the.matter till,the statutory.mooting in March next. AN T INVALID-ELECTION. CorMspondetice'' fronv tho Pahiatuii County Council.,and .the ;Ekctahuna Borough Council, with reference to the election of 31r.'R. Smith,to a seat' on-the District .Charitable Aid Board, ivas read. Under date November 11, -1907, Mr. George Moore, clerk to the Palliatua County Council, who acted as presiding dfficor for the election, wrote notifying the Board of the return of-. Mr. -Smith, as representative of the combined - districts of Eketahuna, Akitio, Castlepoint, Mauriceville, the Pahiatua County Council and the Eketahuna and •Pahiiitiia Borough Councils. This was followed by a protest against'the election from the clerk- ,of tho . Eketahuna Borough Council (dated November ,29), on the grounds that the election was held, at 12 noon instead of at 2.15 p.m., as had been gazetted. ■ ;Their electing- delegate had thereby been prevented from voting. Replying' to this protest, tho clerk to the I'ahiatua County Council wrote to' the Board admitting the irregularity,' stating that in order, to . suit. the convenience of electing delegates the proceedings had taken place at 12.45 p.m.' He stated, further,' that no ollicial i notice . of'the appointment' of the sceredited delegate for the Eketahuna Borough Council having been received, he would not have recogniscd their representative had ho appeared, Tho absence of this delegate, he stated, would not havo affected the result of the election, Mr. Smith having been returned by.six : votes. The 'JUketahuria Borough Council, after consideration, intimated that unless it was given tho right to exercise its vote for representation on the Board, it would decline to recognise its contributory, liability in respect to tho funds of the Board. The lnspector-Geiieral of Hospitals has *incc intimated that a fresh olection will have to b'o held. The .following distribution of funds was passed Wellington Benevolent Institution, £333 6s. Bd.; Wairarapa North Benevolent Socioty, £50; St. Josopli's Orphanago, £13 Is. 5d.; Hutt County Council, £26 17s. sd. Sundrv accounts passed for payment, £7 os. lOu. Tho Board meeta again on January 28.
