. RETURNS FROM THE NORTH, \ The Hon. G. Fowlds (Minister for Health and Education); returned to Wellington from* Mastertoh yesterday, after a three weeks', absence in the Auckland district. ' , While in Auckland the Minister ' transacted a good deal of-public business. Speaking of the Auckland Hospital's new infirmary ward for incurables, the first.of its kind in the Dominion, the Minister said the annexe would;be.most useful. "In nearly all hospitals, there were a' number of cases which; were E ra'ctically incurable, and whose presence was urtful to other patients. He believed that \ ■ ..Hospital Boards in Canterbury -were pro-, posing to unite and,build a similar, annexe. As to the To Oranga Girls' Home cases, . the' Minister said be had .not gone further : y , in 'the matter,.but he had no fear, as to I the results of any. inquiry into'the management of the Home. No . good could.'be. , gained by further inquiry. He - intended to haire. a "third-class" section in the Home,, so secure more complete isolation; for_ inedrrigibles. . .."■'. v •' Speaking of uncertificated teachers, to whose case reference was rna.de,. by the,.Wei-. Jington Education Board a. few days ago; Mr. Fowlds said ho hoped that as the result ,: of the training colleges tho supply of /certificated toachors would" be considerably, increased,;'and. those who were, uncertificated would then find it to their advantage to qnalify-or take a back seat. The Minister, who travolled. south yia the. Main Trunk Line, was very much, impressed with the fine scenery en routo, and particularly with the excellent Waimarino country and the immense tracts of, forests, there. Mr. Fowlds was fortunate enough to have removed from the Parliamentary Buildings, and consequently he was no losor. by ;-- the conflagration. ■■■•■,
It is Intimated by'the. Bulletin Newspaper Co., Ltd., of Sydney, that Mr. Charles Haines; New Zealand Express Building, .Wellington, has been, appointed solo advertising agent in New Zealand for "The Bulletin" and for "The Lone Hand." Quotations for advertising space and all information can be obtained v from Mr. Haine3. After a holiday tour to Sydney, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa, Mr. W. 11. Judkins, of the "Review of Reviews" (Melbourne), sojourned for a time at Botofua. He says the hot lakes district surpasses all the wonders of the South Seas, and if he had the choice again, howould spend the whole of his holiday in New Zealand. The usual South Sea trip, he says, is so htirried that no time is allowed to see the sights. Mr. Jndkins is particularly pleased with what the Tourist Department! ha 6 done for visitors to the Dominion, and he wishes the Victorian Governmpnf would follow tho \ example. '
