A PROMINENT OARSMAN.
NEW ZEALANDER'S SUCCESS IN AUSTRALIA. Mr. It. Arnst, tho well-known Christchurch cyclist, who has recently pulled his way into prominence as a sculler in Australia, arrived by tho Maheno from Sydney. Sir. Arnst contradicts the statement of tho Sydnoy "Refereo" that ho has not lodged his deposit as a challenger of the winner in tho Wobb-Tressider match which coincs off in February. The money, ho states, has been placed with the " Sunday Sun." Arnst beliovos that Webb will beat Tresidder, and that be will have to row the Wanganuii champion. Ovor in Australia he has been imablo recently to arrange any matches. At present he has left instructions with various papers to secure liim a coiitost if possible with either C. Towns or Fogwell for £200. He considers that tho best sculler in Australia at present is Fogwell, but neither the latter nor C. Towns would moot him. In recent matches Arnst has been pulling off scratch. At Broadwater he was to givo C. Towns nme seconds start, but did not compete, Towns also pulling out. The previous weok at Ulwarra he defeated Towns oC scratch. Since he has become tho back-marker in Australia, and is unable to induce anyone over there to take up his challenges, Arnst can only conchulo that a very high opinion is hold of his work. For the last few weeks he has been training othor oarsmen, and is in good fottlo. He is the heaviest sculler in Australia, pulling at 13st. 91b.
Arnst, who wont South last night, is uncertain as to his 'future movements, hut will probably do some rowing in New Zealand unless liis Australian challenges are talcon up. He has left his boats in Australia One result of the hotting legislation over there, he states,' is that comparatively little betting is done on sculling matches. This wn.s the case ill the Webb-Towns event. Arnst has not entirely given up cycling, his intention being to run the two branches of sport conjointly.
