WELLINGTON GIRLS' COLLEGE.

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING. The Wellington Girls' College had its break-ing-lip yesterday evening, when the prizes were presented by Mr. A. de B. Brandon. Lixly Stout and Mrs. Brandon occupied seats on the platform, and apologies were received from the Hon. G. Fowlds and Professor von Zedlitz. On the walls of the schoolroom was a display of specimens of brush work and design excellently done. During the evening tho pupils contributed several part songs, and speeches were delivered by Messrs. Brandon and '.Toynt, and Dr. Anderson. Miss Morrah. the Acting Lady. Principal, read a report of tho school year. Work had been done under difficulties. During the first term she herself had, been absent through illness, and the girls had, suffered later on from the prevailing epidemics. In the previous year, with 187 girls on the roll, the average attendance had been 162. This year, with the same number, the attendance. had fallen to 147. Nevertheless, the pupils had done good work, and the examiners had expressed their satisfaction with the papers.. The Chairman said that, owing to the ab r sence of the Minister for Education, he would not make' tho usual begging speech, which was always directed at the Minister, rather •than at the audience. . Mr. .Toynt, after dealing with the question' of the examination papers which w (ye destroyed by fire, went on to speak of the constant cry that scholars were overworked, and said that lie saw no sign in the faces before him of over-severe mental strain. He congratulated the hockey team on having secured the cup and held its record unbroken. Dr Anderson followed with a happy and humorous speech. PRIZE LIST.
