Crawford) moved as follows:—' ■■"fXI Thnt; in view of .tiro groat impetus, given to building operations in tho Miramar District by tho, opening of the electric trnmways* in the opinion of this Council tho wharf accommodation, for landing timber and other commodities..at the Miramar wharf is qmto inadequate. • (2) That, in view ( of the. immediate opening of tho Seatouii tilniiei for vehicular traffic, the Seatoun. wharf needs immediate extension sufficient to 'enable l carfjo to landed. (3) That, in the opinion ,of this Council.' the prosperity of our district is beiug soriotisly' handicapped through residents hav-ing-to pay heavy cartage charges from Wellington, Owing to the inadequacy of wharf nccamufcdntioii in our district;, that tlieso resolutions be forwarded to; the Wellington Harbour Board, and that the Harbour Board ba ■ naked to treat tho •matter as one of urgency.' His Worship pointed out, that when tho Minimiu ; - wharf was under 'tile control .of tho Council tho receipts exceeded the expenditure 'By"£400 'pc'r'annum. If there had been any . falliug-oK' iu tlw profits—lie felt- ccrtriin thnt there., had been no increase—it could be accounted for bv tho fact that tho Harbour Board regulations—which were, no doubt, suit-' nblo ill the case of wharves—had proved irlcsonio. in his opinion, the Jiiranlar and Seatoun' wharves should bo extended .and widened, and sheds should be erected at both. Tho fact should \>o omphasiwd Unit the wharves / were built for use by cargo boats, as well as by ferry- boats. Undoubtedly, they had tho best harbour anywhere in l'ort Nicholson, Ho Wilis of Opiniim that.all goods for Mirnniiir. lCilbirnie, and Island Bay should lib landed at wharves in Evans Bay. ~Tho motion, which was seconded uy Councillor 8011, wns carried unanimously.
