/•■; NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Glencoe.) Acceptances for the first day's events at the Manawatu Racing Club's Summer Meeting are duo to-morrow night. Taranaki acceptances close on Friday. The Leolantis ; mare Uranium has 'started thr,eo times .this season, and thrico has sho beeii successful. Marguerite has been in work for some time, but she is not likely to be seen out at the Manawatu meeting. ' The Auckland horseman, B. Deeley, who is riding m great form this season* was on the back, of. no fewer than fivo "winners at the recent - Takapuna meeting. The Waikanae Racing' Club must bo very .pleased • with tho nominations received,' for their meeting, and if the acceptances are up to tho average the day's sport should be very interesting. L. G. King and R. W. King both rode a oouplo of winners at the Horbratrt meeting last week. ■ ' 'J ho entries for the Wairarapa Racing Club's meeting aro large and representative. Among the Cup candidates arc - Bucclouch, Fireiron, Riflemaid (last year's winner)," Grand Slam, and half a dozen other recent winners. j.' Tho Dunedin Jockey Club recently reported to the Canterbury Jockey Club that James Pine had been twice finod for using abusivo language to officials. As. this was tho third tiiije Pine had offended in this respect, the Canterbury Club suspended his license for three In September last the Marton Jockey Club fined C. Jenkins for using' abusivo language to an official, and lie was ' tilso reported to the Wanganui: Jockey Club, with the. result that his license' was cancelled by that body. The two metropolitan clubs Appear to hold different views as to tlio'way the law should be administered. . >■ Jockey H. ; Gray was sevorely cautioned by tho Waitara Racing Club for tho unsatisfactory in which he rodo Nikotahi iii the Maiden l'late last Thursday. . .. v Yesterday morning I took an early train and went out to l'orirua to'havo a look at the various . members of Jos. Prosser's team. At the present tune about twenty horses aro in work there, and as they' jncludo somo very high-class animals a lot of prize-money should come theirs way this season. -

The three-year-old Gold Crest looks well, and appears fit any amount of .'racing yet. Ho is in activo work all the time, but will probably not start at any of the Christmas mcotings. , Playmate has quite recovered from the accident ho met with at Clarovillo a month ago, and 'will be a member of tho team for Awapuni. Ghoorka has just completed a light season at tho stud, during which time no served fifteen mares. He looks fine and big, and his coat, has a beautiful gloss. Looking at him'yesterday,, .it. struck me that he would inado a , grand jumper,, and I woiild not ho surprised if he is tried over the battens later on. bovoral promising two-year-olds are being worked, including Hereward, who raceii at the last 'Wellington meeting, a /Stepniai?— iortulla colt, a filly by ■ Stopniak—Belle Clair, and a colt by Stopniak—Mist. Heroward and the Stopniak—Hello Clair filly iiguro in tho two-year-old ovents at ■ tho Auckland mooting, while tho Stepniak— Tortulla colt, will probably make tho journey to, Awa'puni. !he jumpers, • Maui and Pawa, have just been'put.in work again, Maui looks well, and has evidently got over tho.trouble which threw him out of action last season.' Pawa .is very much 011 the big side. • - Ataahua,' Gauze, Swimming Belt, Kuku and All Red are all on tho active list. Tho latter is still growing, and will be a verybig horsq when ho is fully developed. Hois a ;nioo-looking colt, and later 011 should improve oq his 'recent poor displays. Quito an Interesting horse is the veteran chaser, The Guard. Considering his increasing ftgo 110 looks remarkably fresh, and needless'.to. say, 110 is a great favourite with everyone in tho stablo. His racing career extended over six seasons, but in his first and last year 110 raced only once, so that his achievements in tho other four were remarkably good. Ho first appeared as a three-year-old in 1898 at tho Wellington Autumn Meeting; when ho ran-unplaced in a hack race.. At four years old ho was second- in' tho Farewell Stakes at Ash'iiurst, aiid a couple of .days later won a Trial Race at Tauhonnikau. As a five-year-old he won hack hurdlo races at' Otaki, Palmorstoh . North/ and Wanganui, and at the winter meeting 111 Wanganui he won his first open hurdlo, race, his winnings for the season aggregating £225. In August. 190$, lie won* tho Grand. National Steeplechase, tho following 1 May he ran third in' tho Century Hurdles at Wanganui and lie finished" up tho season by winning the Napier Steeplechase. :In tho 1901-1902 season 110 started four times, running to Gobo.in the Grand National at Christchurch, second to Waiwera in tho Wanganui Century Hurdles,' and winning ■ tho Wanganui Steeplechase and the Great .Northern Steeplechase. In ,the Century Hurdles he was only beaten by half a length' and his winnings for the year ran into Four figures.- The next season he broke down badly, and lias not sinco been raced. Ho was a great stayer, and ono of tho best chasers cvon seen in New Zealand, and, with Ad- ■ vanco and Vodettc, ho was a wonderful advertisement for his sire, Vanguard. 1

it was just a piece of luck that Advance Vedette, and The Guard wero not all under the ono roof "in 1899, for ono of Pressor's patrons, who had a great fancy for Vedette mado every endeavour to buy. him, but was not successful. What a great trio it would have been! Mr. K. Cooper, ownor of Sir Artegal, loaves for Christcliurcli to-night to witness the running of his colt in the Nursery Handicap at Plumpton. \V.
