PROPOSED ROADS IN LANCASTER ESTATE. The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night. There were present: the Mayor (Mr. Pearce)"and Councillors Lissington, Spiers, Hammond, Cathie, Putman, Clark, Wedde, and Smith. 1 A plan of proposed roads in the Lancaster estate was submitted 1 by' Mr'. Stout Street; Marshall Street,. Jack Street, Hildreth Street,' Briggs Street: 66ft. wide, two footpaths 12ft. wide oacli, kerbed and channelled. A somewhat heated discussion ensued, the Mayor, and several of the councillors expressing tho opinion that the conditions recommended were too stringent. Councillor Clark asserted that the Mayor was " battling " for the syndicate. His .Worship: I am-only battling for fair play. . ■ Councillor Clark: I may say that I an. astonished at the attitude you have taken up. I would have thought that you would not have taken part in the discussion, seeing that you are connected with the syndicate. The. Mayor. : My connection with-the-syndi-cate is a, very small matter. Tho resident who had refused to ' pay double Care ou a special' car explained tliat tlio car was not-marked "special."-' His explanation was considered, satisfactory, and it. ,was decided ,to inqilire .from tho -Elfcctrical Engineer 'as to the" result' of his investigation into the complaint that tho last'car did not stop '• to pick up passengers. ,T|ie Surveyor-General, writing with reference, to the Council's application to. have a standard survey of the Borough made, stated that it'had been decided that, owing to the. present, heavy pressure of settlement work,- tho proposed'survey could not bo undertaken until i next wintor at tho oarliest. In the moimtimo, it might, he said, bo,well for the Council to take into consideration the question of cost, and .whether" the Borough was preparod to share, tho cost in the usual way, such as providing blocks, including iron caps (where' necessary), also half of the .additional expenditure, say, the.whole cost to r the Council -to be as follows:— Blocks, £85, or thereabouts, and from £170 to £200 for half cost of survey; total, from £250 to £300. Mackenzie asked tho, Council to approve of a. point.of entrance (near Pro- , t'ossor Mackenzie's gate) to " his : property. The'• Engineer's recommendation that .the application bo granted was adopted: The Works' Committeo reported that it had inspected tho Standen Estate roads and found tho channelling -defective, - and ■ tho fencing not completed. It recommended that the streets be not taken over until tho Syndicate has- put them in proper, order or paid to the 'Council the cost of' doing the samo. The recommendation-Was-adopted. It was decided to hold .the next meeting on tho second Tuesday.in January.
