' NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. The quarterly council meeting of tho New Zealand Chess Association was held on Monday evening at tlu;. office of tho honorary' secretary (Mr. Sharp) in Feathorston Street. Tho following delegates were ' present ' ■Messrs. H. L.' James ;and E. W. .Petherick (Wellington"),- J. G. W. Dalrym'ple .(Wellington', Working Men's Club), .P. Still- (Auckland),. F. K. Kelling (Masterton and Rangi-' t-ikei), C. H. Osmond arid R. J. Barnes (Otago), and F. B. Sharp (Canterbury and Timaru). Mr. James was elected to the diair. The Napier Club wrote suggesting that the next championship tournament might be held thero during carnival week in March noxt. It was pointed out that tho Napier Club was not affiliated to the Association, and the place of mooting had already been decided upon: Napier is to : be asked to affiliate: 1 Mr. Kelling, in tho absence of Mr. Davies, moved" That in the event of the number of entries to the next championship tournament exceeding sixteen, tho Congress Committee. may., refuse, to accopt, such private ! nominations from New Zealand as it may think lit." Mr. Osmond moved, and Air. Barnes seconded, under instructions from Otago, the following amendment: —"That there be no restrictions on tlio number of entries further than, as provided for by the rules of tho N.Z.C.A." On application fqr a ruling as to whether the motion was in order , or not, the chairman declared it to be out of ordor, as, if carried, it would constitute an alteration in the rules without the required two. months' notice having been given. Although the Association, or any coriimittee of it, has not any powor. to "reduce the number of entrants, the delegates were gonerally of Opinion that there was no occasion for hurried action, as tho number of competitors, at the next congress is not expected to be a largo one. It was decided to; hold a joint meeting ,of the local affiliated clubs on Saturday noxt, December 14', at 8 p.m.,'in the rooms of the Wellington Chess Club, Manners Street, for the purpose of electing a management,, committee for the coming championship congress. The meeting concluded by dealing with the matter of the Kelling testimonial, which the Association has instituted at the instance of the affiliated qluhs, and .which promises to be . most successful.
