STATE COAL.
f" Mr. ,T. H. Hamer, .-Under-Secretary for ilines, who has just returned from visiting ' the Wanganui State..coal', depot, says that (the-business of.the depot is increasing stead-. >ily, and not. many days ago it saved, the "town oif Wanganui from, a serious inconi \venience. The. gasworks hadrun out of, coal as the result of certain..supplies not, coming to hand. Recourse, was had to the IState depot, -which was able to supply- sufficient coal to save the,.town from darkness. 'The output from the West Coast mines .is ■increasing all the time. .The briquotte plant; is not yet turning out its full supply, .and there is> sufficient demand to account for-, all-the.-output." Mr. Hamer . states,,that numerous applications have been received from: other'districts for the establishment of Stato' coal depots in; their midst. These , are being considered by the Department,, and several'new depots may. be established . before the'increased demand for coal sets in about the months of April and.May. '.-
