SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.
Yesterday afternoon, oil tho invitation of Mrs. Macarthy, about forty poople went out to do somo more navvying work at tlio Island Bay Homo of Compassion. In spito of tho heat, very good work was done, and it was to bo continued by an evening detachment of the same party. Mrs. Macarthy commanded tho labourers, and, in one of tho cool-rooms of tho building, Mcsdamos Butt, Stafford,_ Dovino, W.vlio, and Fulton supplied them with afternoon tea. Among those who wont out were Misses Simpson (2), Ilaybittlo (2), Bristow, Wilbcrfoss, Stafford (2), Whelati, Wylio, ana Butler. There is a good deal of work to be done still at the rosorvoir, arid interest in it does not seem to be flagging. Last week, fifty artillerymen, under Major Hume, went out, and did a heavy afternoon's" work. ' A very successful and enjoyable "At Home" and sale of Xmas presents was given by Mrs. Tudor Jones, at her houso at Kolburno, on Monday afternoon, in aid of, tho Unitarian Church Building Fund. A very gratifying result was obtained. -The pupils of the Convent of the Sacred Heart at Island Bay gave an entertainment oil Monday evening, at which thoir parents and friends wore presont. It began at 6.30, and during the evening there was an .-interval, when cntcrtainors and entertained were provided with tea, a proceeding that mado one realise bow much more charming a concert or organ recital would prove if interrupted iii the same way.. A littlo French play-was cleverly acted by the pupils,.'who also gave recitations, and a display of drill. They will repeat their part of tho programme on Thursday evening, when the annual distribution of prizes will take place.
The two Misses Vallance from Masterton ■are at present paying a visit to Wellington. Mrs. Hugh Gully intonds to return to England very shortly./ Mr. and Sirs. Eichelbauin have gone for a holiday trip to Rotorua. Miss Partridge's friends will bo glad to hear that cho" is making a good recorery from her recent severe illness. Thij wedding of Miss D. Lethbridgo, of Feildmg, to Mr. Taylor will take place on December 18. Mr. Taylor's parents returned from England last week. The monthly meeting of St. Mary's Guild was held at Bishopscourt yesterday, when there was a full attendance. Mrs.' Duiicnn presided. Tho ordinary routine business was transacted, and arrangements wore: made for certain repairs to he done to St. Mary's Homo. Tho whole homo is to ho repapered and painted, as this has not been done for many years.
