Onana, and suiting the action to the word, he threw a seaman's hit, fully loaded with old boots and other miscellaneous trifles, from the deck of the Oriana on to the Rattray Street wharf just as the vessel was about to sail. A prominent citizen, adds the "Otago Daily Times,'.' who chanced to bo in the immediate vicinity narrowly escapcd being struck, and as the kit was dropped from a height of 20ft. the results might have been rcry serious. It transpired that the aggrieved ono was a stand-by, who had been engaged to sail in the ship in place of a deserter, and ho took unibrago at one of the firomdTl who had signed on, alleging that ho had deserted from another vessel in port in order to do so. As n protest against tho alleged infamy-of his colleague, the fireman threiv the kit on to tho wharf, where it was speedily recovered and put on board, again just as tho vessel was mg off her moorings. •
