A GOOD COUNTRY FOR IMMIGRANTS.

Mr.. Honniker Heaton, M.P., just before he;lef£' Sydnoy for Lqndon a few days ago remarked to a representative of the Adela, ido "Advertiser" that to his mind Australia was tho most iiiliabitablo placo in the world. "I nev'tir saw the country looking , better," ho continued. "People have become wiser in providing for bad times. 1 still think Australia is immeasurably superior to Canada, and I have not altered my opinion that it is ; proferable to Africa, or any other country. ■ It is a country in which a poor man can settle. It- is not liko Canada, with its long snowy days and chilling wintry blasts; it is not like Africa, with its : . But there, tho expression would not look well in print! 'I don't want to laud you to the skies, but really—and I say it in all sincerity—it is tho ' best country in' tho world'for an immigrant—absolutely the best, [t is immigration you stand most in need of, and I realise it fully. Believe me when I say every man who lands here to settle is worth £250 to tho country. But immigration mu&t not be carried on in a haphazard manner. What Australia wants is a good Immigration Inspection Board, which will work in with tho Agents-General. 1 know of a number of gentlemen who would he willing to sit on such a board, and would only be too pleased to bo able to do something for the advancement of your fino island continent. With a board of this description, you would boyassured of a proper kind of immigrant, because people desiring to como out would have to be passed. Every week I get'letters from prospective immigrants, asking for introductions to Australians. Tho pc'ojiio are not always the right kind for Australia. Appoint such a.,board, and you would not then hear of unsuitable immigrants." _ . . . ~
