DEATH OF A VETERAN.

Auckland, November 26.

Mr. Alexander Whisker, one of the few surviving soldiers present at the coronation of Queen Viptoria, died, yesterday, aged 89 years. Ho was a member of the 58th Regimout, and took part in the Maori wars.

CHILD'S DEATH.

Auckland, November i 26. Edward Ormosby, two years of' age, whose parents, reside at Morrinsvillp, fell into a water trough and from there was Washed out into the river. Tho body was recovered some days later in a shallow pool.

In the Supreme Court this morning, Alexander Ramsay, charged on seven counts with theft of moneys belonging to Wilson;-Fraser, and Co., at Milton, was'found guilty.cm the second count—stealing £7 on February 2. Sontenco was deferred. Tho jury disagreed on the remaining counts. James Nicholson, Albert Churnside, and Gcorgo Wilson wore charged with., injuring an hotel at Evan's Flat with intent to annoy tho licensee. At tho conclusion of the casb for the Crown, His Honour pointed out thait thoro was very little, if anything, to connect! Churnsido and Wilson witli the offence, and tho jury agreeing with this view these accused wore discharged. In, Nicholson's case an alibi was set up, but tho jury found him guilty on the first count: Sentence was deferred. Frederick- Thomas Daft pleaded guilty to obtaining t.iv.o_suits of. clothes by false pretences, and was admitted to probation for twelve months, on condition that he paid the cost of the two suits and ,the costs of the legal proceedings, £19 in all, and also abstained from intoxicating liquors during the term of his probation." Edward Ernest Masscy was charged with setting firs to a sofa, and chair in a shop at Kaikorai, knowing that the building was likely to take fire, his intention being to defraud. ■' The case was unfinished when the Court rose. , : ' j A DUNEDIN CASE. ■,■'. Accused was fined £10 with costs (125.) for using obscene language, and £1 with costs for assault, the alternatives Doing four months' and one month's.imp.isonmont respectively.

The sessions of the Wellington District Synod of the Methodist Church wcro commenced licre to-day, the Res'. P. W. Fairclough presiding. The Rev. S. Garlick's application to he made a supernumerary foi one year was granted, testimony being borne to the devoted and eminent services 'rondered by Mr. (Jarlick to the Church for 32 years. The Row W. H. Speer was recommended to be accepted by the Conference as a minister on trial, and the Revs. Paris, Blair, Maslin, and ■ Richards were recommended 'to pass in their year, subject to their written examinations proving satisfactory. A DREDGE MASTER. DROWNED. ~ Dunedin, November 2G. ' Captain M'Lay, master of tho Hartley and Rilcy dredge, and ono of the oldest dredger masters in Otago., was drowned at Cromwell this afternoon. He was going ashore when the ropo holding tho traveller broke, and the boat capsized or was swamped. Hβ swam for somo distance, but could not get ashore. Deceased was sixty-eight years of age,,imd followed the sea till 1861, when he ' settled in Central Otago. ACCIDENT TO A CYCLIST. Woodville, November 26. A man named Herbert Bell, who is emSloyed by Messrs. Kirkcaldie aud Stains ct apior, rtiot with an alarming' accident at the Papatawa Railway station on Friday afternoon. He was going at a good pace on a motor bicycle, when the machine failed to sharp turn just past the railway crossing, and ran into a fence. Bell was thrown against a post, and received a deep cut over tho left car and, a bad wound on the thigh. Ho was insensible when picked up and taken to a neighbouring house. It was some hours before he recovered consciousness. The doctor considers, it will bo some woekj before his recovery is complete.
