WAIRARAPA NOTES.
(FROM OU3 SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) A meeting between the Gladstone and East Coast Natives and Mr. iiibberd, of the Wairarapa Stock Department, is to take place at Gladstone 011 Saturday next, to cousider the question of tfle eradication 'J noxious-weeds on Native lands. The Natives will also, incidentally discuss the matter of unpaid rates. „ late Stock Inspector -t \V;:iroa, and formerly of' the Wairarana, passed through tho district the. other dav, oh route to Nelson, whero 110 is to tako up his new duties. It is reported that since tho Carterton Borough Council placed ox-eye daisy in the lii'st- schedule of the Act, compelling eradication, there has been a considerable lessening of the ■ pest in the town. It would appear that something of this kind is required '11 Palnatua, where tho unbuilt sections of land are covered broadcast with the white post. . One of the'best dairy herds in the Wairarapa district is that of Mr. Blackwell, a supplier to tho Daleficld Dairy Factory. The herd numbers twenty-one cows, with an average of SoOllj. of milk daily. The champion is a shorthorn cross-brcd, "whose rccord so rur is 331b. of milk in one morning, with a -i. test. Messrs Abraham and' Williams's spring cattle sale, held tho other week, has just about eleancd up that class of stock in the Wairarapa lor a few months to como. Visitors to Masterton in the trado consider the sale to have been one of tho bostmanaged- they had- seen. The yards were idled by 5 o'clock 011 the morning of tho sail, and practically cleared again by 5 p.m., wne.i tho whole line of over 2000 had been so! I. Mr. M. T. West, manager of tho DaU'iiekl Dairy l 1 actory, carried oil the special prizo cheeso trophy at the Hawera show tho other day, for the third time. Ho has won it twice as manager of tho Daleficld Factory and once as manager of tho Ngaire-Factory. The trophy has to be won three times, ami it should, thcrcforo, be Mr. West's entire property, but the fact that the wins are not all under oiie Hag, as it were, discounts their worth. Mr. West and Juggler, the'champion hack, which lias won the Challenge Cup at the Wairarapa show on three different occasions, but under different owners, arc in precisely the same position. It can easily be believed that, air being well, .tho DaleJiol . Factory will be a cheeso competitor at the next Hawera show. " When. l see sorrel growing," said a Masterton resident, "1 know that it is growing on a lazy man's land." Asked for further inlormation 011 the subject, tho informant stated that if tho land harbouring sorrel was lorn up ill tho summer.ill any way, tho weed would soon die, as it could not stand the heat. Sorrel could also be eradicated by good grass sowings. If a paddock was neglccted, howeverj and sorrel got a chance, it would jeign supreme.
The Mastcrton Fruit-growers' Association comprises a small liody of enthusiasts who are battling against odds 'in the shape of public apathy and financial difficulty. At the last animal meeting of the Association there were only two members present, but the institution is still being carried on with much perseverance. Eggs are being brought in, hut not in very largn numbers. The Greytown Association is very much alive, and r o i:ir fully 5000 eggs have been purchased this year.
