BIG HAUL IN THE SUBURBS,
■ OVER £500 MISSING. ;.,-.•' Tho enterprising burglar lias boon at work with some effect at Karori. i According to a" report furnished by Mr. W: F. England, clerk of tho Karori Borough Council, the sum of £509 !)s.' 7d. has been stolen from' the suburban Council. Tho money, in cheques and coin, was securely locked up in the strong room in tho Council building on Friday, but was removed some timo between ton o'clock on Friday night and nine o'clock on Saturday morning.. • The thief or thiovos apparently took their timo over their work. Tho strong room is a brick structuro, 10ft. by Bft., and is built on- to Me -Council Chambers. Thero aro no windows in tho room, and no openings of any kind except a door which-opens into the Council Chamber. Tho thieves mado a hole in the'brickwork about a' foot each way, and thus gained access to tho safo, after which the rest was easy. Of tho amount stolon, £256 odd had boon placed in tho room on tho Friday by Mr.. Thompson, borough engineer, for the purpose of paying wages on the Saturday. Part of tho money was in a leather brief bag, and the balanco was hold in a cash box with a broken lid. A considerable amount of tho money taken was in tho form of cheques. Tho theft would appear to have been committed by some person who knew tho run of tho ropes, and know that the fortnightly pay-day was Saturday. Tho polico have takon tho matter up, but ' so far no success has attended their efforts. " Chubb's safes are famed throughout the world for their burglar-resisting qualities. Messrs.
