IMPERIAL DEFENCE.

COMMON BURDEN. THE COLONIES AND THEIR SHARE. BY TELEGRAITI—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. (Received Nov. 24, 4.50 p.m.) London, November 23. Colonel Soely, presiding at tho annual dinner of tho Imperial Federation Dofonco Committee, urged tho reconstruction of tho Committee by adding representatives of both political parties and of tho Colonies.

. General Hutton (formorly Military Commandant in Australia) said ho regarded as highly important tho action of tho Secrotary for War (Mr. Haldano) aμd tho First Lord of tho Admiralty (Lord Twcedmouth) in adopting tho principle of co-operation in matters of defence. Sir Gilbert Parker (Conservative member for Gravesond) expressed tho opinion that more practical work was accomplished at the Imperial Conforonco on the military than on the naval side. Colonial naval dofence ought to bo proportionate to the Colonies' growing wealth. Mr. Harold Cox (Liberal member for Proston) said tho Colonies and tho Motherland ought to make a fair bargain. It was unfair to loavo tho wholo burden to tho Motherland. Tho platform of the Imporial Federation Befenco Committee is to advocate combination for tho purposes of defence, in tho first instance by maintaining a common Navy.
