FEILDING. At a meeting of tho Committee of tho Feilding Horticultural Society, Mr. Prior in tho chair, arrangements wero mado tor the spring show on December 6. Mosdames Haggitt, Fitzhorbert, Darltrop, Aylinor,. G.' Walpolc, and Messrs. C. FitzherUert and tho Mayor wero appointed a staging committoe. Tho judges are: Mr. A. Allison, pot plants and flowers; Mr. W. E. Woightman, fruit and vegetables; Mesdames Porter and Aylmer, decorative classes; Mesdames R.'• Thomson and Fairfield Thompson, produce. The late Hon. W. W. Johnston's splendid homestead at Awahuri, near Feilding, is said to have been disposed of to a Southern buyer. '' Thero was the largest attendance for some time at to-day's sale, and the yarding was very good. ..'.'.' Only one tender was received- by the Fending Borough Council fpr alterations, to the municipal buildingc It was decided not to accept the tender, but to postpone the matter till early next year, when labour may be more plentiful. ' ' ■ . . : Mr. Edward Newman, who was in Feilding last week, informed; the "Star" that that ho will - certainly bo a candidate for the Manawatu scat, at next general election. Mr. Newman is well known in Wellington and iii Farmers' Union circles. ; Mr. C. J. Roakos, Assistant Government Veterinarian, arrived in Feilding on Tuesday afternoon, and proceeded to Cheltenham, where- he delivered a..-lecture. Mr. .3. Mills occupied the chair, and there was a lairly good attendance of farmers. Tho lecture' had been arranged by the Cheltenham branch of the Farmers' Union. : PAHIATUA. The sale of work in aid of the St. Mark's Church debt extinction fund concluded on Thursday evening. Tho result was satisfactory, and over £150 was netted. CARTESTON. . '/,,'. ■■• A local' firm records £400. worth of business as a direct result of the recent show. Busi-. ness was brisk in every portion of , tho town during tho week,' and everybody benefited. With its present progressiveiiess it is. hardly possible that Carterton will countenance any amalgamation of shows which will result in any great change of locality so far as the town itself is concerned. It is reported that a number of Tur'akina bank; notes ;wero unloaded-, into tho totalisator. at the recent' Taratahi race,' meeting. : Mr. Fred. Jackson, of the local Borough Council staff, entered the.Greytown Hospital last week to undorgo an oporation for- appendicitis." .-'■."■ . , ' -' News received here states that Messrs. E. Collins and M'Pheo, local residents, at present' inmates of_ the Cambridge Sanatorium, aro progressing very favourably. ■ The Carterton railway station has just been lit' with gas, and at night presents quite a fine spectacle. There aro in all six arc lamps, each of about a hundred candle power, and those aro distributed at the station .along tho platform, and at tho stock yards. The installation was effected very smartly by the Government and municipal stall'.

Greig, was attacked and .knocked down by two men, *'ho,took Bs. and other valuables from him: Constable Bree arrested a man .named Simmonds in connection ,'with tho robbery. Simmonds appeared before Mr. O'Connor, J.P., on. Friday .morning, and was remanded for eight days.
It is proposed to convert the hitherto useless vegetation which is stripped from flax, into: cattle fecdi as this waste matter has considerable fattening properties.

A painful'accident occurred on tho railway worke near Ohakuno on Wednesday ■tvhoroby a man named Jamos Starks was badly injured about thojace and oyos by a dynamite explosion. First-aid wns rend'ored by the local chemist, and the sufferer was despatched to tho Wanganui Hospital Surveyors aro now on work on the property known as "Tho Farm," on the RaetibiOluikuno "Road. This estate will bo-sub-divided into three stations, which will probably be disposed of by ballot. The Ohakiuio Sash and Door Company has had, owing to pressure of work, extensive machinery and engine power added to the plant. If tho' works now in progress at the Ohakune Railway Station may be taken as a criterion, it is to be assumed that it is designed to be an important point on tho Main Trunk line. Earthworks are now in progress to form a large yard, and it is stated that a turn-table will be put in to accommodate the large class of engine which . will bo in service on 'this northern. section.
Good, progress has boon made with the 'enlargement to the Oliakuue Post Office, the building work being almost completed. ■The Raetibi factory butter is now being rtjtailed-.it'ls. per Ib. at the stores. The factory has been fairly busy for the past few. weeks, Irak suppliers arc. not quite so liuinqrais as in previous years, and it is not considered that tho output this year will tip , So.. great as it was last year.

Though not heavy, it is calculated that the clip will bo satisfactory. -'■'•Tho : Ohakunc Progressive Association have met to hear the report of the deputation sent to Wellington to interview tho Minister for Public Works on-the subject of obtaining a grant for the purpose of improving the Ohnkuna streets.
