SAILING. ~''.. . ■'.''. • • , The first of a series of three races for the championship of the Thorndon Dinghy Sail- , ing Club was sailed on Saturday - afternoon.' An excellent race resulted. Soon , after -'-the start,' the "Zel" "hurdled" the 1 chain'connecting a- hulk with a buoy instead of round-' ing tho hulk, and immediately' the bpata finished a protest was entered against -the Zel's- win. The protest will be considered by the. committee on Tuesday night.-There was a light north-easter blowing. -The fol-• lowing boats competed:—L. Palmer's Zel, T. Bailey's Thelma, A. AldredVlrex,. J.;S. Swan's. Blowfly, B. Stirling's Vera; Jones and' Sargent's' Oeo, W. Mooro's Ajax, J. Scott's Spray. On'the first leg to windward' the Zel at 4 hrs. 3 min. 30 sec., Thelma by tho Thelma, a position-which she held throughout.-. The Irox and Vera, slightly.in the rear of the leaders, had a great "go' all round the course, the Irex just beating the Vera on the post. The race was won by the Zel at 4 hrs. 3 min. 30 sec, Thelma !being second at 4 hrs. 5 min.-20 sec.' t .lrex third at 4 hrs. 12min. 30 sec. Tho finishing times of the other bfiats were:—Blowfly, 4 hrs. 13 min. 20 sec.,- Vera, 4 hrs. 13 min;. Bsec, Oeo, 4 hrs. 15 min. 35 sec, Ajax,,, 4 hrs. 19 min. 27 sec. Spray retired' after completing two rounds. A handicap' race;; will be hold'on Wednesday ovening. , ."'■',-"■ > The i'ort Nicholson Yacht Club got off three races on Saturday afternoon.
