SCHOOL EPIDEMICS AND TEACHERS SALARIES.
The Education Board, at its meeting is October, had before it the difficult problom of dealing with certain' eases of reductions in salaries and school staffs, consequent upon a reduced 'average-attendance,' duo to recent demies. A committee was set up to deal with the question, and its ronort submitted to the Board yesterday. After consideration of the matter, from which it appeared that the Board's average for : the year would probably be affected by . nearly ; 500 ' pupils, and that the safo guards., already existing appeared, with a vofy few exceptions, to protect most of the casos directly affected by the epidemics, f hu committee was of opinion that relief .should be sought in referenco to the following tli.-- c points :~-Th at in three cases of reduction .if staff on October 1, due mainly to, epidemics tlio' salaries of the teachers- be' continued to December 31; that, in any cases whero a fall of grado is -involved owing to the effects of tho epidemics extending over more than two quarters thcro be permitted the substitution of three quarters of the preceding year for thoso-of the affected quarters; that, owing *° th ° o ™ d " ctio ," in per-centage of attendance fronvß/..4 for 1906 to probably 84.5 for 1907 7 e .% ! ?. r 4 bo refunded an amount equal.
