CHARGE OF ASSAULT.

An assault charge of considerable interest came beforo tile Police Court to-day, in con. noction with' the recent prosecution of tramway conductor ; Spencc, for defrauding the Tramway Company. Olio of tho witnesses against Spciici; was a youth named Ward, employed as a fitter nt tho Ponsonby tram> way barn, nnd on returning to the barn al'tor giving evidence, he alleged that throe conductors violently assaulted him for "putting Spence away." Ho also said ho appealed twice to the foreman, who saw what took place, for protection, and the foreman said it was no business of his. .This tho foreman denied, and tho three accused also denied tho charge preferred against them. The .Magistrate, Mr. Kettle, S.M., commented on the seriousness of an assault on a Crown witnoss, if such too!; place, nnd said it was quite evident, that perjury was being com-, mi.ttnd. somewhere. He would take timo to coiisidoi' the question of sending the ease to a. higher Court for trial. The Court Adjourned till tho morning.
