THE RIVAL ASSOCIATION.
AMALGAMATION QUESTION DISCUSSED. The proposer], amalgamation of the Wairarapa and Masterton A. and P. Associations was a topic of conversation amongst the Hawko's Bay breeders at to-day's show. The general opinion amongst these visitors is that amalgamation would be an advantage to them, and that with it they would make a point of supporting tho show every year. At present they did not feel very much disposed to visit either show. It appears, howover, that the proposed amalgamation will go by the board, owing to neither society being ablo to agree as to the locality of-tho now show grounds. The Lower, Valley people wish the show to bo either at Carterton or Taratahi, while Masterton wishes it to bo cither on tho grounds in Masterton or at a site east of tho Waingawa river,
BUTTER AND CHEESE. SOME CRITICISMS. . In commenting upon the chccso awards, the judge, Mr. S. A. Dmnbloton, of Waitara, and formerly managor of the Daleficld Dairy Factory, said that from a general point of view hq did not notice any great improvement in" condition of the product during recent years, and, until something was done to improvo tho quality of the milk in the primary stages, the quality would not be what it "should be. In connection with this matter Mr. Dumbolton expressed his satisfaction at tho intention of the Government to inaugurate a system of inspection of cow yards, but he was doubtful of any particular success iu this lino for some time. So far as tho cheese exhibits themselves.were concerned, they wcro very creditable, and there was little to choose. All the managers were working on tho same fines. There seemed, to bo an all-round weakness regarding the flavour. Thia may have beon clue to the quality of tho milk supplied. The making was good and showed any amount of skill, Finish and got-up wore good. In connection with the cheese awards, surprise ..was expressed at the success of the Feathcrston cheese factory in winning two ont of three prizes against tho redoubtable Taratahi factory,, which has had such a successful career during tho past two years at tho National Dairy Show at Palmerston North.
Mr. W. F. Ugo, Chairman of the Featherston Dairy Company, states that during the past few- seasons suppliers liavo made a point of getting milk into the factory much earlior than formerly. Care was also taken to cool the night's milk. The -factory had lately been almost rebuilt, and -was . now 0110 of tho best in Now Zealand. Speaking with reference to butter,', Mr. Dumbelton expressed the opinion that' the dairy butter was a very good , sample. The exhibitors in these classes had no. knowledge of factories, and their 'work in their particular line was most commendable. The factory butter was good under trial, but it would have been very much better if tho butter -had shown more acid, so that it would have possessed improved keeping qualities.'
