THE WAIRARAPA SHOW.
SUCCESSFUL ..'OPENING. DAY.
.(by TELEGEA.ru —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTS.)
Carterton, November: 20;-r-Tho first day's proceedings have pass#? off smoothly and in brilliant -weather. A largo crowd watched tho riding contests; which woro well up to tho usual m interest, A rillo that no horse may tako more than one first in saddle, and. ono first hi harness, is apparently popular, and 1 tho entries w ere large. A feeling exists that a somewhat similar rulo ought to be applied to the sheep and cattle classes, in order that the rank and file farmer may bo better encouraged O compete alongside the stud men. _ ■An interesting event of to-morrow will .be tho contests for tho Challenge Qupr and the £25 prize for the Hunters' Stecplccnaso,- or which\ there are 20 competitors. There are live entrants for the buckjumping melee, 01 which tho Society provides the horses, but renounces alPliability for cracked lieads. ,lho competitor's are J. O'Grady, J. M'Naughton, Tasman Smith, G. Laury, and R. J. Harris. Thero is a large field of hacks, and ,tno destination of Mr. W. E. Bidwill s Challengo Cup is quito an open question. So, also,, is t \o fate of the Ladies' Hack Challenge Cup. . i .*0 ton guinea Quibell Challengo Cup. for the biggest winner in 4ny ono breed of sheep was gathered in by Mr. Wm. Peiry, of Penrose. Tho'figures in this little fight are given in another place. Mr. John (Strang, of 'Gladstone, won the Southdown cup of equal value. Somo uncertainty was occasioned over tho Romney ram champion by the fact that he was entered at • W anganui in the name of A. V. Collins and here in tho name, of James Collins. It .appears that it i$ tho samo shcop. The uncertainty caused some astonishment to bo expressed that Mr. E. J. Riddiford should apparently have bred two champions so much alike. The trophies of tho Society have a total value of £120. The Association possesses a very' handsome collection of, photographs, which are at present well displayed'in . the new luncheon' room, and wero. attracting much attention to-day amongst the visitors. Prominent amongst pictures were two fine photographs presented by Mr, 11. S. Moss, of the twelve presidents, whose names have already appeared in Thb Dominion. There are also photographs of the late Messrs. A. M'Hardy and W. 'Booth, and Messrs. ,D. MfMaster, ,\V. C. Buchanan, and several stock champions. The weather has been perfect all day, and People's Day to-morrow should' be a great event:

There was no fault to find with "tho champion bull md cow. Tho hull, which I first saw at the Melbourne Show, was a good, heavy-fleshed animal. I believe ho was awarded second at thi3 show. ROMNEY'MARSH.(Judge, Mr. R. Tanner, Longburn.) Judge's .Comments—The champion ram, owned by Mr. J. Collins and-bred by Mr. E. J. lliddiford, is one of the animals we should like to see more of. Ho has just gone through the strain of tho shows at Hawke's Bay, Manawatu,- and Wanganui, and he has conic out of'it well. Thfero are few sheep like him in the Dominion:.. ' As for' tho Romney bxhib.it were very uneven.,,... There were,a.few very goow ewes, but generally-they-: wero not; of the proper type.
