Manning, who was in command of the Mararoa during the time that vessel was engaged in the WeUington-Lyttelton ferry service, has been transferred to the new turHino steamer Maori, due this morning. Mr. S. MT)owall, formerly chief engineer of the Mararoa, has been appointed to a similar capacity on the Maori. Mr. W. B. Cunningham, late purser of the Mararoa, has also been transferred to the new steamer. Mr. Gill will act as assistant purser. The chiof officer' is Mr. J. g. Stringer; second, Mr. C. Roberts; third, Mr. F. Goosky. The trawler Nora Niven arrived at New Plymouth at i p.m. yesterday. Captain Brophy will temporarily take command of (jhe Mararoa. He has just relinquished tho Kittawa. Tho Monowni's passengers from Melbourne and Hobart transferred to the Mokoia at Dunedin. She left that port yesterday, and is duo at Wellington on Thursday morning. It is stated that tho new turbine steamer Maori is too long by 20ft. to b? accommodated by the Port Chalmers dock. Tho vessel is 350 ft. leng. Owing to the striko of coal minors at Newcastle, the steamer Harbart will call at Wellington for banker coal. .The vessel was originally destined for Nowcastle. Sho has been discharging cargo from Moji, Japan, in New Zealand. Tho Star of Now Zealand, which arrived at Auckland lost night, from New York, via Australia, has 1000 tons of cargo to discharge at tho Northern port, aftor which she proceeds to Wollingtou. Many anticipate that an attempt will be mado by tho Maori to lower tho WellingtonLyttolton record. It is understood fhat arrangements will bo mado for tho Maori to leave Lyttolton on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays on arrival of tho 7.45 p.m. train from . Christchurch, and reach Wellington in time for the express train, which leaves about 8 a.m. ' The Shaw, Savill steamer Waiwera, which arrived at Wellington yestorday for bunker coal, lwives for Auckland to-morrow. The vessel is timed to sail from Auckland on December 2 for Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington, and is duo about Decombor 8. Leaving this port on Decomber 12, sho proceeds to tho Bluff, thence to Port Chalmors, from which place sho sails finally about Decombor 23 for London. Captain J. W. Sydney that day, will arrive at Lyttelton tomorrow. Tho warship will probably remain at Lyttolton for two or three months to enable Uoyal Naval Reserve mon to go throngh their annual training. Mr. A. F. Loveston, late chief engineer of tlio Eotomahana, has been transferred to the Muraroa, and Mr. Burt, late of tho Pateona, : has joined the Eotomahana as chief engineer. The steamer Indramayo, which arrived at Fremantlo from New York a few days ago, is expected to come over to New Zealand ports to load wool, after completing the discharge of her American cargo at Commonwealth ports. . As was anticipated, says the "Newcastle News," of November 9, tho underwriters did not accept any of the tonders for raising the barnuentmo Kate Tatham, which was capsized in tho Newcastle Harbour on November 4. The vessel, as she now lies, was sold privately by the owners, Messrs. Tait and Mills, of Napier, to Messrs. P. Callen and Sons.' The amount of the purchase money has not been made known. Advices from Singapore state that a syndicate has been formed of prominent Chinese residents of tho Straits and Malay States, with a capital of 1,800,000d01., under the,name of tho Eastern Steamship Company. Limited, to purchase tho forty steamships which have been engaged in trading -between Southern China, Burma, and the Straits Settlements. :
Tho iron four-masted barque Ellisland, of 2355 tons register, owned by Messrs. John Houston and Company, Liverpool, has been sold to Messrs. A. Weir and Company, of Glasgow and London, for about .£7500. She was built at Southampton in 188+ by Messrs. Oswald, Mordaunt, and Company; dimensions, 302 ft. 3in. x 41ft. 4in. x 25ft., carries about 3600 tons cargo, on about 22ft.
