BETTING TOTE ODDS.

STRONG REMARKS BY A MAGISTRATE. [BT TELEGRAM.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] . Duncdln, November 19. At tho Polico Court to-day, Bonjamin Curtis, tobacconist, pleaded not guilty to three charges of betting tote odds. Evidence for tho prosecution was that n man named Goddes sont telegrams to Curtis from Wellington and Riccarton races in August, backing cortain horses, tho arrangement being that he was to be laid at tote odds if ho won. Goddes won £82 145., and in settlemont Curtis sent him a cheque signed by his son, and which was dishonoured. Geddes instituted civil proceedings for recovery of tho money, but was nonsuited. The defence was that the bets wore not mado with Curtis himself, who was lying in a semi-conscious condition at the tirno. Tho Magistrate held tho case proven, and said this Gystora of gambling was tho most pernicious in oxistence. It was quite clear defendant was a bookmaker in tho habit of making bets, and on this occasion ho was dishonourable enough not to pay debts owing by him. He thought it was a njoan, despicable act, aud ho did not intend to take a lenient view of it. He would fine defendant £20 fin each of tho threo charges, with 11s. 6d. costs in each instanco.
