OBITUARY.
■ ■ ♦ ■ — (DY TELEGRAPH—FBESS ASSOCIATION.) Hamilton, November 18. Mr. William Shanaghan; Clerk of tho Court, died on Saturday night as the result of a paralytic stroke on Friday. Deceased was sixty-six years of age, and served in tho Maori war previous to joining the Justice Department, thirty years ago. He was- for twenty years clerk at Papakura, seven years at Lyttelton, and was transferred hero fivo years ago. He leaves no children, but his widow survives. Asliburton, November 18. Mr. Charles Edward Fooks, who, has acted, as clerk and engineer, to: the Ashburton' Borough Council, for a largo, number of years, died at his residence yesterday , after a short illness. Deceased relinquished the clerkship in 1901, but was retained! as. engineer until the time of his death. Ho .was 78 years of age, and' arrived in the' Dominion in the Steadfast in 1851, and for some time practised as a surveyor., and architect in .Christchurch.' He was also -in- the'survey -office of, tho Canterbury. Association, 'and' engineered a number of the-chief publid-works in Canterbury on behalf of the Government. Mr. Fooks arrived~in- Ashburton'in. .1871, and" was subsequently appointed cleri : -of. "the first county controlling body, the Ashburton Road Board. ' He carried out extensive" drainage' works at Longbeach on bohalf of Messrs. John G.rigg and Russell,, and planned the first open water race in, tlio county.
