KAIRANGA DAIRY COMPANY.

OPENING OF NEW FACTORY. DAIRY , COMMISSIONER PRESENT. The new and, in every souse of the word, modern factory which has just been completed at Longburn, to- the order of the above company, was opened- at noon on Monday by Mr. W. T. Wood, M.H.R., in the presenco of a largo gathering -of dairymen and factory managers. ' It ivas in July last that the establishment of the company was mooted, and later a creamery at Kairanga was purchased, from Messrs. Nathan and Co.,' when the-suppliers immediately commenced operations, tlu cream being sent to the Rongotea Dairy Company until such times as the present factory was completed The total number of shares allotted by the company is 824, of £2 each, and they' are subject to the payment of the .full nominal amount in cash. The total amount of cash received by the company for- the. shares is £160 16s. The expenditure in connection with the laud and factory is estimated at about £2000. The building, which is 48ft. by 36ft.. has all the very latest modern dairy appliances. The water supply is obtained from an artesian well, which gives an abundance of clear water. In fact, this is a special feature of the district, and clear water is within the reach of every dairyman for cooling his milk. Mr. Cuddle, at the opening function, laid special stress on the cheapness of driving pipes for artesian wells The power of the factory is supplied by an eight horse-power «"E'ne driving two Alpha-Laval separators. The brand of the butter lias been wisely named after the prosperous district of Kairanga." THE LUNCHEON. Mr. J. C. Collis presided over tho luncheon. Mr. Wood, M.H.R., in proposing "Success to the Company," said that he helped to start a cheese factory in Longburn many years ago, and also tho freezing works there, the cheese factory weut to the wall, but the ireezing works still survived. The suppliers to this'company must keep solid. He believed the time would come when the Government would have to step in and stop so many dftiry companies starting together.. Where suppliers tell out with the managers (probably owing to dirty milk and: other reasons) and started ui oppositjon, such'a course.was ?c i° use themselves, or to the factory, If they supplied good clean milk there would be no reason for opposition. He contended Uiat urease of dispute the Dairy Commissioner should be sent-up to investigate, and if possible rectify the trouble. Such a course would be preferable to disunion. The time was, lie believed, not far off when the Dairy School would be established in their- midst. (Loud applause.) He had never left a stono unturned to secure this object. (Hear, hear.) There were many direct advantages which ™c district would -derive from the school. The Chairman, in - reply, said that Mr. Wood -had hit a vital mark when he mentioned cleanliness. -When this company was formed thirty suppliers signified their intention of supplying, and they wero true to their jvord. The company was prepared to pay the uttormost farthing of profit.' It only remained for the suppliers to do the rest. Lp to, the present .they had paid 10d., which, with the ..exception of Bunnythorpe, was the highest price m the district. Ihey had been fortunate ill securing a competent manager—a man who would favour no one. Mr. Lancaster proposed"the toast of "The Dairy Department." -:. V : ' Mr. Ciiddie, in reply, congratulated''tho directors and shareholders oil their modern factory, which, was :a credit.''/. The only fault was tnafc the building- was oil the small side* but there would be no difficulty in providing the; extra, . The' directors have'guarded against the.'mistakes'of other' companies. _ She;locality was' one of the best in tiie Dominion', being near a'good commercial centre and handy to a railway. Ho spoke highly of the qualifications of Mr. Brash, the manager. "He regretted 'that, in many, cases cleanliness was not. observed among the suppliers, especially m places where competition was keenest. Ho had heard of instances where the managers wero told not to refuse milk as long as it would go through the separator. The season had some effect, but the suppliers, .were greatly to blame. The class of stock also affected the industry, and there was a tendency to overstock; The toast of "The Visitors " .was coupled with the names of Messrs. Laing and Arnold both of whom are largely interested .in tho dairying industry. / Mr. Laing considered the Company had adopted the right course in leaving cheese manufacture alone and giving its whole attention to butter. .. The toast-of "The Directors" was honoured with great enthusiasm, and replied to bv tho Chairman. ; . ANNUAL MEETING. . To-morrow evening the' first 'annual meeting be held in tho Kairanga Hall, when the report will be submitted and the directors elected. . Chairman announced at the conclusion of. the gathering that the ladies of Kairanga had arranged, to give an' entertainment to the suppliers at, an- early date.
