The Huddart Parker Company's steamer, according to advice received by the Company, left Sydney at 3 p.m. on Saturday, for Wellington direct. SAILING VESSELS FOE LONDON. Mr. Georgo H. Scales reports having chartered the Bailers Avon and Loch Garve, to load on the wool berth at Wellington, for London. The Avon is at present in Sydney taking in stiffening ballast, and ought to bo in readiness to 6ail from there for Wellington during this week. Tho Loch Garvc should leave Melbourne, for Wellington, early next month, ■ BARQUE FORMOSA FROM LIVERPOOL. A SMART PASSAGE. On Saturday morning, the barque Formosa, HM tons, Captain Frotwurst, from Liverpool, dropped anchor in the Stream. Tho vessel left Liverpool on August 15, and experienced ordinary winds to the Equator, which was crossed in 2i degrees west. Sho lost the south-east i trades about this time, and encountered gales of an average strength. On October Zi, a heavy westerly gale raged, accompanied by high dangerous seas, sovcral of which broke oil board.' Considerable damage resulted, tho main dock-houso was smashed, ventilators wrenched, hatch coverings shaken, and many minor items wore recorded. Another violent gale sprung up on October 2fi, all tho deck ftxturcs_on this occasion being more or less damaged. Favourable' weather was experienced for a few days, when a severe storm was encountered on ISfovembor 1. Heavy seas broke over the ship, smashing ladders and damaging the shin's fitting? gon'erally. The Formosa passed Tasmania on November 3, and encountered a succession of south-cast, and east winds, with an .occasional calm in., crossing the Taeman Soa,
Cape Farewell being sighted on November .12. Some four years ago this smart sailer, in charge of Captain Fretwurst, only occupied 83 days on the same journey. The Formosa, •which is under charter to the Gracio Beazloy Company, has about 2006 tons of cargo to discharge at Wellington, and will then proceed to Dunedin to complete unloading. Messrs. Johnston.and Company are the local agents. The Oreti and Kennedy arc expected to load explosives ex Opawa, from-London, via Auckland, for the West Coast to-day. The first steamer to cross.the Atlantic was the Sir'ius, which was. 178 ft. long, and her tonnage 450. At. present twelve French vessels, with'a .total tonnage of 23,711, arc on route to .Hobart for orders. Captain Brophy came up from Lyttelton .in command of the Mararoa yesterday, Captain Manning remaining ashore at Lyttclton." " A steamer is heing fixed to load a million and a half feet of hardwood at Bunbury in January for New Zealand ports. The Komata will load in Bunbury jarrah for New Zealand. The Hauroto brought a large motor launch from Auckland on Saturday, consigned to Nelson. It was transhipped to the Rotoiti, which left for that port last night. The Patea trader Aorcre left port yesterday morning for Patea, but stress of weather caused her to return during the afternoon. She is timed to sail at noon to-day. Tho New Zealand Shipping Company steamor Opawa, from London, via Auckland, arrived at Wellington yesterday. She is anchored at the powder ground, where a quantity of explosives will bo discharged. Tho Union Company's new turbine steamer Maori, which is to replace the Mararoa in the ferry service, is to leave Lyttelton, for Wellington, to-morrow night, and is .duo hero on Wednesday morning. The Eastern Extension Cable Company's steamer Patrol, which has been engaged since October 26 in repairing the Sydney-Wakapuaka cable, arrived at Wellington yesterday morning. It is understood that tho vessel has called to replenish bunkers. Captain A. J. Emslie is now in charge/of tho Union Companv's steamer Wainui, trading ■between Melbourne and Strahan. He raidi a considerable period chief officer : on the. turbine steamer Loongana, and subsequently, took charge of tho Kamona. , . According to "Fair Play," Mr. William Lund has ordered a now twin-screw cargo and passenger steamer for his line to Australia from Messrs. Barclay, Curie and Co., of Whiteinch, Glasgow. The vessel, it is stated, will.be considerably larger than his last new steamer, the Geelong. This steamer, which was built bv Messrs. Barclay, Curie and Co. hv 1901, is 7954 tons gross, 5134 tons net, 450 ft. 2in. long, and 54ft: sin. beam, and has two sets of en'gines 23in., 40in. and Gsin. by 48in. stroke. \
