A STRENUOUS LIFE.
PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT AND THE OFFICERS. Mr. Roosevelt has created intense consternation among Army officors who have contracted sedentary habits by a remarkable 6rder enforcing them to practise the strenuous life. Scores of middle-aged officers who, tied for years to desks at the War Office and other snug departments, have assumed the burden of rotundity have been informed that they, must pass a strict test of their horsemanship or be struck from thovtctivc list. According to the commands of tho equestrian President, some sixty corpulent captains, majors, lieutenant-colonels, and colonels will ride forth on October 8, and, under pain of retirement, display their ability to walk five miles,* trot five miles, jnd gallop five miles through Rock Creek Park. Tho sight is expected to bo one of Homeric laughter, and the sedentary officers are already petitioning General Grant to keep all sketch artists and photographers at a respectable distanco from the scene of their "circus rido." Mr. Roosevelt states that he is convinced himself by personal observation that many field officers arc physically unable to ride evon a few miles at a fast gait.
