ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR JOHNSONVILLE.
» — CONTRACT SIGNED. WORK TO COMMENCE IMMEDIATELY. The Town Council of Jofmsonvillo has taken an important step alone the road of progress by deciding to have tho place lighted with electricity. Some time ago the Council invited applications for the installation of tho supply ot a system of lighting, and a number of applications were received from ncctvlcne gas, gasolene, coal gas. and electric light suppliers. After going fully into the various applications, tho Council has decided to accept tho offer of a syndicate to instal the electric light in the district. Already tho site for a power house has been obtained at a very reasonable figure, and the necessary machinery and plant have been ordered from England. It is anticipated that the plant will bo in working order by the beginning of April, so that residents of Johnsonville may look forward to having their houses lighted with electricity for next winter. It has been decided to use suction gas as the motive power as this style of plant is said to have been proved to be the cheapest means of generating electricity, where water, power cannot be obtained. Tho contractor anticipates making a start with tho erection oi' the necessary buildings and plant .within a few davs. The voltage will be 220, and the price per Board of Trade unit—one C.B. o.t. unit being equal to one sixteen candle-power lamp for sixteen hours—will be eiglitpence, with a discount of 20 per cent, for prompt paymont. In return for the concession, which is for thirty years, the syndicate has agreed to supply the street lamps, which will. be of twenty-five candle-power, for 255. 2d. per year per lamp. The Council has given an order for sixty street lamps, with a right to add to this mini", ber as tho district becomes more thickly populated. The prospectus of the proposed Company, which is to be called tho Johnsonville Electric Lighting and Power Supply Company, is to be issued in a few days. Applications for shares may be made to Mr. ,T. W. Braithwaito who will supply householders desirous of belli" connected, with further information as to the cost of installation, etc.
