MIRAMAR ROADS.

At tho meeting of tho Miramar Borough Council on Thursday evening, the Mayor and Councillor M'Lcod, who had been appointed to : suggest names for several roads in the borough,- made the following recommondafcions: — : l-.r Road from city boundary to Church Street, Seatoun, via tram route —" Broadway. ''■ ■ '■ 'i. Road from city boundary at Evans' Hay to . fortification Reserve, \ Shelly Bay— " Miramar Quay." 3. Road from Miramar Avenue to Matsii Road —"Para Street." Para was the name of tho main valley which runs up to the Defence rosurvc. It is alluded to in historical works as "Tho .Classic Vale of Para." •i.'ißoad from Miramar Avenue to Broadway—" Ira Street." The Ngati-ira (Ira tribe) are said to have occupied Miramar for eight or nine generations. 5. Road from Matai Road to foreshore, ■Wbrsor Bay—" Awa Road." The Ngati-awa werp tho last Nativo occupants of tho peninsula. G. Road from Broadway to Dundas Street, Hill Road—"Tiotio Road." Tiotio was tho name of a widolj'-famcd tohunga. Some historians maintain that lie lived about the time of Cromwell in Oruaiti pa. His sons-in-law were noted warriors. 7. Road from Marino Parade (Borohaven) to Awa Road (pilot station)—" Marino Parade." 8. Road from Mantoll Street to Pass of • Branda—" Oruaiti Street." Oruaiti was tho mime of the pa on the spur to the southeast of Seatoun. Many a warrior famed in the battles of the Ngai-tahu migration to the South Island is said to have been nurtured at Oruaiti. U. It was resolved that the question of naming these roads be settled at the nest meeting.
