LAWN TENNIS.
WANTED—MORE COTJRTS. DEPUTATION TO THE RESERVES COMMITTEE. Affiliated to the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association are no less than 35 clubs, with a total membership of nearly 2000 players. At the present time nearly half those members are unable to take part in matches, owing to the fewness of courts. That was the fact which Messrs. F. M. B. Fisher and W; H. P. Barber, M.H.R.'s, introducing a deputation from the Association, sought to bring home to the Reserves Committee of the City Council yesterday afternoon. The Hon. Secretary of the Association (Mr. A. H. Kimboll) added his eloquence to that of the two members to induce the Reserves Committee to redress this grievance.
The deputation wished to obtain the'use of the grounds in the Botanical Gardens, facing Botanical Gardens Road, and also a site hitherto used for the hauling engine in connection with the new recreation reservo. If these sites were placed at the disposal of the Association, it could set up five or six new clubs; in addition to providing court-B for the existing clubs in the town. ' The Roservos Committee seemed to be sympathetic to the Association's needs, and the Acting-Chairman (Mr. J. Smith) asked Mr. Kimbell to write to the Chairman of the Committee (Mr. J. P. Luke), who was not with a view to fixing a time when members of the Committee; the Association, and the City Engineer (Mr. 'W. H. Morton) might visit tho. place together. After an inspection the Committee will consider the request, and make its recommendation to the Citv CouneiL
A site in Elizabeth Street, near the Kilbirnie tunnel, was also mentioned by the doputation; tat the committee explained that this had been already earmarked to provide a recreation ground for boys and girls.
TROPHIES. The Hon. Secretary of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tonnis Association (Mr. A. H. Kimboll) has so far received trophies from the following, in connection with the annual tournament ,to be held on February 1, 2, and 3, at tho Day's Bay courts:—Tho Rev. T. M'Kcnna, Messrs. 3. G. Wilson, C. C. Cos, Frank Grady, G. Donton, E. G. F. Zohrab, J. Duthie and Company, _C. F. Adams, G. W. Morgan, and E. W. Mills. SCHOOL-CHILDREN'S TENNIS. Mr. A. H. Kimbell, hon. secretary of tho Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association, recently suggested to the Wellington Public Schools Lawn Tennis Association the desirableness of inaugurating matches between tho teams under their jurisdiction. It was stated that if tho teachers had Aot timo to direct such competitions themselves, the Wellington t Association would ba willing to manage them, if so dosired. A reply has been received to the effect that tne Public Schools Association, while thanking the Wellington Association for ita proposal, does not think it desirablo to promote an inter-schools competition. Many considerations have led the Association to this opinion, the chief reason being that few schools have a court of their own, or free access to one, so that tho competition would bo limited to a few entrants. Mr. Kimbell states that he had previously offered to arrange with tho Wellington City clubs to place their courts at tho disposal of the schools on Saturday mornings. ;

MEETING OF NEW ZEALAND <■ >, ASSOCIATION. Messrs. G. Hurley, F. ,Humo, A. Howe, M. Denniston, F. Laishley, and Geo. Goldie (secretary) were present at la meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association held last evening in Batkin's Room. The Secretary read a letter that had been drafted for submission to tho Lawn Tennis Association of • England advocating that power should bo given to the Now Zealand Union to arrange tho draw, instead of being guided by the random draw in championship meetings. The argument used in the letter is that a\\ the best players may be drawn in one half or section, and rr.ediocro players in the other, with tho result that ,thc best player may be left to fight out the final with quite an ordinary player, who has, on the face of it, no chance, thus destroying dll the interest, as far as the public is concerned, instead of the final being the best game in the event.
Mr. Goldio mentioned that he received advice by the las), English mail that there was an agitation against the random draw at Home. It was a rule that was always being and it was suggested that tho iv- "Uior be rubbed out or modified in the (-.. : Now Zealand.
It v. . ■ ,1-x'ided that in the opinion of the association the operations of the Australasian association bo conducted in Melbourne for the coming year. (The headquarters are at present in Sydney) The Row R. Harry wrote thanking tho association for bis appointment as one of the New Zealand Union's delegates on the Australasian Union.
Dr. Letham (New Plymouth) wrote thanking the Council for his election as President of the Now Zealand Association.
The programme of tho Pahiatua Club's third annual tournament, to be held on January 1 and 2, was approved. The Secretary pointed out, with respect to the visit of a 'ladies' team to Sydney, that it had been found inadvisable to send a team
across in October, as it was right at the beginning of our season, but a team might be sent over to the New South Wales championship meeting in March. The association owed Now South Wales a ladies' visit, and New South Wales had .owed the New Zealand association a men's visit for two years. The Secretary was of opinion that if it was intended to send a team a start should bo mado to make the necessary arrangements. The cost of sending such a team would bo £51 in fares alone! Mr. Laishley suggested that players should be circularised, in order t<) see what ladies would be available for the team. The Chairman thought the meeting should be adjourned for' a week, and that in the meantime a cable should be s,ent to Sydney asking if the members of the team would be mado guests (luring their stay in Sydney. This was proposed as a motion by Mr. Denniston, and passed. It was decided to hold the adjourned meeting on Friday next. . It was pointed out that a good idea of the form of lady players could bo gained at the New Zealand championship meeting, to he played at Now Plymouth on December 26, 27, and 28. ' ' '
