The Duke of Atlioll, who is now in residence at Blair Castle, whoro he is the lord over 200,000 acres, is one of the very few remaining Scottish nobles who are privileged to retain in their service bands of armed and uniformed clansmen —in fact, private armies, lieally and truly, of course, this is illegal, but the practice has boon winked at ever since Queen Victoria in 1842 acknowledged Mio "Athol Highlanders" by presenting them with now colours. They arc well nrnied with modern rifles; but the "Farquharson Clansmen" still carry tho old-fash-ioned claymores, as do also tho Duke of Fife's "Duff Highlanders" and the "Stuart Clansmen" of Balmoral. ■
