A HECTOR MEDAL.
PERPETUATING A MEMORY. A coimutteo has been formed with tho intention , of taking stops to perpetuate tho inomory ot tho brilliant scientist—ono of New Zealand's most eminent men—tho late Sir James Hector, : K.C.M.G., M.D., F.lt.S. It is proposed to present a medal to tho leading senior scholar of tho Now Zealand University each year. Tho committco is to comprise *ho Premier (Sir Joseph Ward), tho Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), the Hon. G. Fowlds (Yinister for Education), the Hon. J. M'Gow.in (Minister for Justico), and tho Hon. Dr. Findlay (Attorncy-Gonoral). Tho following appeal for subscriptions is being issued: — "Through tho death of tho distinguished scientist, Sir James Hector, New Zealand has scon the passing away of another of the intellectual gentlomen who did so much for tho Dominion in tho early days. We feel suro that there aro many who would liko to' seo his memory perpetuated. It has been thought that a 'Hector medal,' to bo presontcd to tho most distinguished senior scholar of tho University each year, would form a method of romembranco which would 'appeal to all who know tho kcon interest which the deceased took ill education in its highest and broadest senso. £120 would endow a medal. It is suggested that tho money should bo handed over to tho University Senate, and that the dovico and presentation bo left 'entirely in its hands. Dr. Mason, Wellington, will acknowledge all subscriptions sent,"
