CHRISTCHURCH NEWS.

(From Our Exchanges.) There were three important social' functions in Christchnrch last week, at each of which, her Excellency Lady Plunket and the Hon.' Kathleen Plunket were present. On Tuesday evening the Canterbury Jockey Club held their annual ball in the Art Gallery and Provincial Council Chambers. The ballroom was prettily draped in cool-look-ing green land white muslin, and'largo baskets of scarlet geraniums and ferns hung from the coiling. Tho colour scheme of the decorations in the drawing-room was pink and white, tho dais was a veritable bower, formed by arches'of wisteria and pnlo pink roses.. Large plants of white and' pinkazaleas and beautiful palms were arranged about' the room. Tho excellent supper was provided in the Provincial' Council Chamber, and the long corridor leading to it was decorated with , yellow broom and lighted with Chinese lanterns. Some of tho dresses worn were exceedingly pretty. An " at home " was givon by Mrs. Gould on Thursday afternoon. It was to have taken the form of a garden party, but owing to the frequent showers this was abandoned,, and the guests wero entertained with music in the house. Mrs. Gowcr Burns sang delightfully several times, other songs being given by. Mrs. Kettle and Miss C. Kettle, and Mrs. Wilding played. The ball given in the Art Gallery by Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Greenwood, of White Rock station, on Thursday evening, to celebrate tho coining of age of their two sons, was one of tho' most successful that Christchurch has. known for somo time, and went with a most delightful swing from start to finish, dancing being kept up till a lato hour. ■ Mrs. Walter Mooro and the Misses Mooro returned from a trip to England last Thursday. , ; Miss Agnes Humphreys also arrived last week from England. Mrs. Wigram and Mrs. Beswick have returned from a visit to Hanmer. Miss Barker (Geraldino) is the guest of Mrs. Macdonald. I Miss Anderson reUrned from the North Island last week.
