Tho engine had not been working well for 1 some time, and Steele went to examine it, ] having a lamp in his hand. No. sooner had t he opened tho engine-room door than an ex--1 plosion took place. Steele, Mead, Isles, and > Goodson were badly burned. • Tho boat caught ■ lire, and'all the deckhouse was burned. „ . Steele .was badly burned .about the hands, (. legs, and head; Head was badly burned about t the hauds and face; Isles suffered injury to e his face, and Goodson's injuries woro slight. :1 Tho accidcnt happened midway between the r wharf and Mokoia Island. A. E. Kusnbs, with tho launcli Aloxandra', 1 went to render assistance,; and,' tho fire was f subdued by tho tiino the boat readied tho " wharf.- r.
