THE CHRISTCHURCH SHOW.

ITS BEST FEATURES. In discussing the best features ■of the Christclmrch Show, Mr.: A. Buchanan, of Palmerston North, said the shorthorns were a strong feature—a feature in which Manawatu was weak—although it was pleasing to note that a Manawatu-bred bull won the championship. The Ayrshires wero a very fine type of milking Ayrshire. Tho.Jersoys were numerous,,and of much better.quality than those of last year, whon some of oho best prizes wore given to animals of doubtful purity of breeding. On this occasion tho breeding was bn the most approved 1 lines; but some of the animals showed a slight tendency to lightness of body whoro depth is gonerally looked for. The milk vessels wore fairly good, showing the benefit of tho recent importations made by Mr. Georgo fiull, of Christcliurch, and .Mr. James Stiickey, of Wairarapa. Tho bulls wore not equal to those exhibited at Manawatu, oither in number or in quality. Witn the excoption of those of tho "Dry Monopole" breeding, tho females also wero not high-class, and somo woro, undoubtedly not of pure blood. At a recent meeting of the Royal Horti-cultural-Society,-Mr T. A.-Scarlett; of Eclinexhibited tubers of what is said to be a disease-proof potato. 'The potato. is not a now variety, but-<r very old orie^a 1 black •Scotch kidney, called Trqchie Grant —and was" shpposed to be lost ;to dultivation; but it ; has bfeen discovered arid brought to light. It is said that there is documentary evidence to show that, ■ though grown since 1745, 't has never■ shown the 'least sign of disease. Probably .we shall hear more about' Trocliie Grant later on, as regards its-cropping powers and ediblo qualities. Tho colour is not what is wanted in these days, but it is something to hear of a variety that has never been known to take-disease, and, with this potato to work on, hope is given that a disease-resisting-variety of modern type may yet be raised.
