DESTRUCTIVE TIDAL WAVE.

The full text of an Apia me'sago relative to tho eruption at Savaii states that: tho volcano has become much enlarged, and is now~said by many judges to bo the most extensive activo eruption in tho world. The outflow, of lava is tremendous, and is in-, creasing, all tho timo. The high walls of the volcano have fallon in, groatly enlarging tho opening 'towards tho sea. No valuable lands 1 , have been affected. All tho flows run oyer the old lava fields, deepening thorn and /'heightening the cliffs. Steam clouds from .tho volcano, rising to a hoight of 10,000 feet, are common everyday sights. .
Tidal. waves havo been frequent on the north shore of the Island of Savaii. The highest was seven feet above extreme hio;h; water",, iv : '.ich did considerable damago, and many of the residents havo left the island. Other-pispes ; besides Matautu: and Salela ar,c reported.to bo considerably .affected. On 6ctober 6, a tidal, wave swept Matautu; smashing' boats on- the beach and doing-.much damago to the copra and boatsheds on tho water front. A number of private residences also' suffered considerable damago. The tidal wave reached the residence and trading store of Mr. Brunt, the water pouring into tho house tea height of over six feet, smashing the "windows, carrying awhy the verandah posts, leaving the roof hanging'by a few supports. The buggy-shed was crushed in, and in its.fAll wrecked thrco buggies. A' 400-gallon tank full of'/jvate'r. was lifted bodily from i*s stand i and. ..deposited on the cement verandah./'!;., smaller tank of '100 gallons was carried'oh to the street. ~-,-■ .'lt is stated that a large island is arising off .thje'east".end' of Savaii,:'and probably a now crater will bo developed out in the sea! , On','October 12-it" : was reported from ''Mat-' antu • that!'since'the afternoon of the Bth, ash;and salt•!'water rain 3 have fallen with slight 1 intermission.' On the Bth, a rain, of ashes Jell all'along'the coast. The bananas',' cocoanutsi and bread' fruit suffered.
