A process for extracting oil from tho residue of kauri gum found in tho swamps has been tried with somo success (says the Kai,para "Advertisor.") Tho oil was tried for painting purposes and declared to bo excellent for marine work. For house painting it was not altogether a success, th" difficulty being to sufficiently refine it. However, it was clearly demonstrated that thero wore Jargo possibilities iii the direction of obtaining a very satisfactory oil, and enormous quantities of it, from the deposits in our gum swamps. Another interesting discovery also was that in the making of tho oil un illuminating gas was generated that gave an excellent light. This gas was conducted from the oil pipes leading from tho cylinder by a small-upper pipe, and a practical proof was given by llr. Trevor of tho value of the gas for lighting purposes when lie successfully lit up business premises with it.
