Lord Soult and Gold Crest rushed to tho front, and when a furlong had been traversed they were more 'than a length ahead of tho remainder, 'and when tho straight was reached tho gap had been increased. It is a long-time since Lo Beau had a run: on; dry ground and on-Saturday he won easily, jirdying that he'is a-fair horse when tho going is good. ' Asteroid made a had jump opposite the stand and tho Fordell maio nearly came down., Her ohanco was hopeless after that. ' Dawn' was made a very hot favourite in the Mriden Plate, and boat the large field in a most decisive manner. He must possess a good chance in, tho Derby'to-day, but I expect Gold Crest to beat him. All Red 1 was unlucky at tho start but tho manner in which Dawn won made it appearas if the Birkenhead coltf would havo won under any conditions. Sister Anne is a nice-looking chestnut filly that should, improve a great deal. V ■'' ■'>• ■ ~~~ 'White Cockade. l Grafton Loch, Rod Rain, Golden Way, and The Hand were scratched for the Maiden Plate. v Amboise can gallop very fast for a few furlongs but cannot stay. .. Swimming Belt \does not finish woll and seven furlongs appears far enough for him. Stratagem has improved somewhat and may score at this meeting... . . ' The hurdles at Riccarton are too; big for little horses • like Asteroid, and Black: Reynard. Both were- triors on Saturday, and both were badly beaten. I look to Sen Siin to show marked improvement in his next ofFort, say over a one mile and throo-quarter course Black Reynard finished on thrco logs on Saturday. ■■■■'" Tho times for the different distances of the New Zealand Cup wore: \ mile, 51-Jsocs.; 6 furlongs, lmin. lOaecs.;, 1 mile, lmin. 45sbcs.; miles, 2min. lljiiecs.; 1} miles, 2min. 3G.Jsecs. Sho could have easily broken' 49.3CC5. on Saturday had sho been pushed. Elovation got a very bad run in tho Cup and was nearly down twice. Frisco carried six pounds over weight in tho Aew Zealand Cup. The ring, received a very heavy knock by tho victory of Frisco in the Now Zealand Cup. , The Rand is a fine-looking black 'colt It was a big task to ask a three-year-old to carry list. Cl l> ami run a solid milo but lie camo out oi tho ordoal witli flying colours though ho only won by a head. Czar Kolohol showed up prominently over the first six furlongs in the Ladies' Purse but lie ,was a long way out of it at the finish. Persuader wns made second favourite but ho failed to secure a place. ' Of the sixteen acceptors for tho Now Zealand Cup Biicclcucli was the only withdrawal and when the various candidates appeared in the birdcage there was groat excitement among the spectators. Mnuiapoto looked active but it/was generally conceded lie was not up to the journey, and this proved correct lor ho.was not prominent after a mile and a half. Master Delaval showed signs of tho workhe had been doing, but there was nothing particularly attractive about his preliminary, hie got a bad position at tho start, and when Buchanan took him. to the front it evidently took a lot out of him for ho was iinnblo t'o respond to Frisco's challenge. Under his weight, however, he ran a really good raeo though quite a number, of "grandstand
jockeys" informod mo that lio should havo boon handled differently. Buchanan says tlio horso ran up to expectations, but that the had position ho secured at the start was all against him. When ho caught Mahuta ho thought tlio raco was safe but Frisco was too good at the weights. Gold Crest put up a wonderful performance, for, after breaking away twice, and being chased about among the trees at the hack of the course, he accounted for his opponents in simple fashion. W. Young is to bo complimented for his efforts to regain liis wandering steed. The position looked bad for backers of the chestnut at one stage, and. they were agreeably surprised at the ultimate result. King Billy put in a groat finish in the Stewards' Handicap, and on that form ho should be sure to win a race at the meeting. Red Gauntlet was prominent at one stage, and it looked as if he would finish next to Lord Soult, but he faded away again. The whole field seemed to he broken up by the pace that was sot, and none of the horses behind King Billy had a chance. Guidwife looked well when doing her preliminary, and will be heard of before the mooting closes. Eqna, who won the Selling Race, was racing in open company at tho National meeting, and was sold at the conclusion of that fixture. Armamento was made second favorite to Cockleshell in this race, but the brown horso was again disappointing. i Paritutu nov?r stripped better and ran well, but at the business end he faded away. •Armistice looked well, and her party were confident.of success. She was prominent in the early stages of the race, but finished in the ruck. Zimmerman appeared to bo on tho big side and scarcely lit. / Grand i Slam showed a lot of muscle, and ran the journey ouS in. good style, but ho nover looked dangerous. Mahuta was much admired in fcho enclosure, and was as lively as a kitten. He ran a groat race, and led the field along at a very lively pace, maintaining tho load till about a quarter of a mile ,fi'om homo; It would have been a wonderful performance for him to lead all tho way, and that is v/hat tho crowd thought ho was going to do. Apa gave amplo appearance of having 'undergone a severe preparation, and his stable mate, Frisco, was full of life. ■ D. Price, who recently arrived from "the other side," was unable to go to tile scale at 7st.. 81b., so Mr. "'Preston'"'secured Len King. Oliver was given his choico of the two mounts, and olected to rido Apa, so that is how King camo to bo on "the winner.'-
Probablo looked well and ran well till the final furlong, whore he compounded badly. Lapland is nothing on looks, but bo must be a good stayer, and his frequent seconds and thirds are to be accounted for in that way: Ho was tho least-fauoied candidate of the field. Gazoley moved short in his preliminary, and did not appear to relish the going. Elevation's performance was a good one, as tho colt had a rough passage over the last i seven furlongs. If he is not sore from his' exertions, he should run well in the Derby, but after seeing Gold Crest win the Stewards' in such an easy manner it looks odds on tlio son of Gold Reof to-day. L. G. King, who rodo Frisco, had to reduce his- weight in a hurry, and after the race , was-over the exertion told. on him severely. He was ongaged to ride Idealist in tho Stewards' Handicap, but was too oxhausted to take the mount, and W. Price was .ongaged. King made up his mind before the Cup race that Master Dolavnl would be the hardest to beat, and decided to keep in his wake throughout the raeo, but the Auckland horse secured such a bad position that King determined to got on tho' track of Apa as tho noxt best stayer in the race; Ho found Frisco going bott<!r than anything whc,n the straight was reached, and though he felt a trifle nervous when Master Delaval assumed tho lead, he felt sure of victory immediately he moved on tho Fordell horse. King is ono of the most suceossful of the South Island jockeys, and rides a clover, patient raeo. The Stewards' Handicap at Riccartou usually brings out a good field, and on Saturday thore wore .no less than twenty starters. '■ Munjcot and Huascar wore bracketed on the machine, and were the favourite fancy, but neither of tho pair ran prominently. '■■'.' Lord Soult was well backed, and ran a great race. Ho is a quiet little horso at tho barrier, and, being such a good beginner, ho is always worth a bet with reasonable weight. King, who rode Frisco in tho Now Zealand Cup, was so ill after, his ride that ho had to bo taken home and put to bed. It appears that ho took off eight pounds on Friday last, and the ofl'ects of this made themselves apparent after the race. The owner of Frisco is said to havo won over £4000 by the success of his horse ou Saturday. Tho C.J.C. Derby promises to bo a most interesting raeo to-day. Gold Crost Will be favourite on tho machine, but Bonny Glon, Glenculloch, Elovation, and Count Witto havo all got supporters, and a good contost is looked forward to. G. Prico will return from Riccarton on Wednesday and rido tho Poririia. horses at Curtorton, and W. Young will stop behind and finish Mr. Prosser's riding at Riccarton. Muskerry 7st. 131b. and Contender 7st. 1211). both look to possess rather more than outsido chances in the Criterion handicap today. Derby Day was most unpleasant, owing to the presence of a hot north wind with clouds of dust. The hot sun, however, diil not mar the attendance, which was very-large, and included many fashionable public men. Probably the big attendance in the Jawns and stand was partly due tu the advertised intention of so many Governors to be present, those present including the Governor-General (Lord Northcote), tho Governor of New South Wales (Admiral Sir Harry Rawson), the Governor of Queensland (Lord Chelmsforcl), the Governor of Tasmania (Sir Gerald Strickland), and Sir John Madden. Lieutonant-Goveruor and Chief-Justice of Victoria. . The betting ring was very busy all day. Tho threatening drought apparently did not prevent the attendance of a large number of country people, and tho crowd was swelled by city people, who, owing to the Gaming Act, wore unable to bet anywhere else. The dressing of the ladies was very stylish, pale tints predominating. The following are the results: — MAIDEN PLATE. One mile. Hon. A.
