When the' German barque Edmund left Vancouver for Sydney, sailors were scarce, and, being unable to procure a full crew, she' was compelled to commence her voyage shorthanded to the extent, of eight men. . The Edmund, which is a vessel of nearly 30G0 tons,! , reached llobson's Bay on Monday, Octo-ber-21,. laden with 2,500,000 ft. of lumber, a large portion of which was carried on deck. She; accomplished a creditable voyage . of. G7 days, and met with no noteworthy ex-jeriences until the night before arrival', nt 'the Heads when, during sonte terrific squalls, the loss of several sails occurred. They were , blown clean , out of the bolt ropes, with a loud rcpoii, as the squalls struck the ship almost without a..moment's warning.
THE PIERRE ANTONINE IN A GALE,
The barque Pierre Antonine, bound from London to Sairl-rancisco, put into Sydney recently for, the purpose of repairing some damage which was caused durjng a gale. The vosse sailed from London on Jun« 11, and called at Cherbourg, leaving that'port on Juno id. Hie equator was crossed in -43 days, atter which head winds prevailed to the Cape of Good Hope, which was passed 77 davs out. On October 5, when near tlio Tosmaniun coast, a strong gale sprang up from the nor'west, accompanied with heavy seas. The main topsiul and staysail were blown away, and the rigging whs strained and loosened. Captivin Saintlo decided te run for Sydney for repairs, the remainder of the trip being without, incident. It was anticipated that the vessel would bo detained live or six days.

The barque Ganymede, with a cargo of timoer, irom Greymouth, arrived at Melbourne on October 19, after a rough voyage extending over nearly five weeks. - At one time the situation was alarming. Sails were blown out ot.tne bolt ropes as if they were paper, whilst an exceptionally heavy sea, which broke over the vessel, caused the lashings of her deck cargo of timber to break adrift, with the result that nortion of load was swept overboard before the fastenings could again be secured Uio cabin companion-way was also smashed by the seas, and other minor damage inflicted on deck, but, luckily, the crew escaped injury. , The work of breaking up the battleship Montagu, which ran ashore on Luiuly Island, Hnstol Channel, about ID months ago, is proceeding apace (remarks a London journal). I lie company which bought the wreck are actively at work, blasting and carrying afrav metal, ironwork, and. parts of the machinery trom the engine-room, as fast as they can-get at it. Several hundred tons of salvage have already been taken to llfracombe and disposed of. About a score of hands are engaged on the work. They are. housed in the old Momco-Castle, oirtho island. The intention ot .the salvors is to work on into the winter as long as the weather will allow, and to re'sume as soon as possible in the spring.. The "Sydney Commercial News and Shipping List", states that although the Govern, mout promised assistance to any private company that would undertake the construction of a dock at Newcastle, some time ago,' no company has yet decided, on building one there, and large vessels hafe still to come to Sydney to be cleaned and painted, or for auv extensive repairs. Why the offer has not been accepted is a puzzle, for there is little d.qiibt that it would be a very profitable venture. Our local docks are being kept busy, and in some cases'vessels have to remain in port for days before they can be docked, on account of the large number of vessels requiring attention just now. A dock at Newcastle would receive liberal patronage, judging by-the.num-ber of vessels that call there to be cleaned or painted before proceeding to the northern port to load, and if a large suitable dock was at Newcastle all that work could bo done there, and shipowners or charterers--'would not have to pay 'port duesiat- Sydney and ■••Newcastle,-, as they have to do at present, when, one of their vessels, requires, docking.:;, .:-. ■.-,. ■METEOROLOGICAL. .: . ..
