■■;.-— ——« GYMNASTIC CARNIVAL. A fairly largo audionco was present at tho Opora House last ovening to witness tlio annual gymnastic display of Messrs. Harrison and.Juriss's gymnasium, which has come to be regarded as an institution in the realm of calisthenics. Viewed as, an exhibition of tho work _ in the gymnasiums' cur-; , riculum, it was a. capital display. Credit must be given to the promoters, the evidence of whose assiduous training during tho winter months was apparant in the well-set-up figures of both sexes. Another feature waa the admirable stage . management,; everything being managed with • clock-like precision. The pupils ranged from tiny, seven-year-old girls to. matured women, from sturdy youngsters still in tho infant: stage , tp'men whose muscular, development was a treat to witness. After Mr. J. Turner's Mandolin, 1 Banjo and •' Guitar Club had given a selec-. s tion , the performance-began with a grand. ■ massed tableau. Then came a Roman, rings display by all ages and both sexes, followed ~ by a very attractive calisthenic display by tiio students of the Wellington Girls' College, ' • The jumping and vaulting-horse- exercises* by .:.■■-. girl* and, boys was wildly exciting, and the . rythm of concerted motion was admirably achieved in the Sandow dumbbell exercises by ladies and gentlemen. There- was> also ■*&■■■■■:■■ horizontal-bar display by young and, old,. ...' wand calisthenics by the ladies, class, and whirling running maze by girls and youths to a musical accompaniment. In the second half there was >a fine display of coloured clubswinging bj r combined teams, a parallel-bar display ending with an effectivo tableau; a quaint crocodile march by • youths, further horse-vaulting by grown-ups; a pretty figure march, and a grand concluding tableau. , In : this part also Mr. J. W. M. Harrison gave:,, a clever exhibition of-club-swinging.,.,with. . electrically-lit clubs. 'A clever clown proved himself an expert acrobat and gymnast as well as a humourist;of parts. ..Miss F..Warren, A.T.C.L., presided at. the pianoforte for the calisthijnic exerciseSj and Messrs A. Kitto and A. Crum made efficient stage managers. MR. MARTIN SWALLOW'S; CONCERT. The programme for to-night's concert in the Opera House is published' in another column, and judging by the excellent items t<l bo given, there should' be a crowded' audi. ence. . Professor Swallow will: play the "Moonlight" Sonata of Beethoven, and in hi» hands this fine N sonata is sure to be.magnify ■ ' contly rendered. Selections'from "II Trovii- .
