A VALUABLE BEQUEST, MR. BEVERLEY'S ESTATE. [DX TELEGRAPH.—rBEIiS ASSOCIATION.] Dunettin, October 31. It is understood that the late Mr. Arthur Bovorloy's real estato, which has been bequeathed .to Otago University, . is. of the value of not less than £10,000, and is to form a sopara-tc trust fund. The University Council is empowered'and desired to retain the present investments of the testator as permanent investments, and to regularly add to the trust fund one-tenth of the net income resulting from the.estate, the balanceafter paying charges, to bo .used for the ad-, vancemont of education in Otago. Preference is expressed for teaching the mathematical, mechanical, and physical sciences, and subjects akin thereto, and that natural, science be next considered. The desire is also expressed for the founding of scholarships to encourage and assist persons of both sexes who have talent and industry, but not wealth. Provision is also made for printing and publishing such of the-testator's manuscript works as the executors may select for the purpose. FIRE ON THE KETCH ENDEAVOUR. . I' . . JURY'S, VERDICT. ' Auckland, October 31. Tho inquiry into the two recent outbreaks of fire on the ketch Endeavour was concluded before the Coroner this afternoon, the jury returning a unanimous verdict as follows :—"We arc of opinion that- both fires were wilfully caused by some person or persons intimately connected . with the ketch Endeavour, and .also'that there is .not sufficient evidence to enable us to determine by whom the fires were originated." A PECULIAR CASE. Christchurch, October 31. Phillip Kissell, serving a sentence at Lytt'eltou gaol, 'who attempted .to., escape on Septo'irjcr 12, appeared before Mr; Bishop, S.M., r-t Lyttclton, charged with being an incorrigible .rogue. Kissell had; been brought up' on, this chargo about a fortnight ago, but his statements were so incoherent and his manner so peculiar that it.iwas thought-he was feigning insanity,- and the Magistrate remanded him. AVhen he came before Mr. Bishop this morning his demeanour, had complotoly changed, and he was quite rational. Air. Oloary, governor of the-.gaol, said Kissell had been in the asylum.,' The. Magistrate imposed a sentence of-twelve months' imprisonmo'.it, to, run concurrently with the accused's piesont sentence. ~-'■ . a ROUBLE ON A'STEAMER. ' Dunedin, October 31. Sixtjmi firemen .andj-.trimmers .signed off in a body from the Warrimoo yesterday, giving as the reason that'they objected to work under f'p third engineer. While at the . She was driving'in a ! milk cart with Mrs. Fordo, when '• the horse shied at; a: tractionengine, the cart capsized "and the girl was pinned to'tho ground,' Mrs. Forde escaping. A . convict named Charles Newton, alias Murray, serving a .term- of - six yea'rs' imprisonment for theft and burglary'," escaped ifrom a. gang working on the sewage works outside the . local., gaol this i.ihorning. ' Two shots .fired by the :warders wore unheeded, but he j was- captured shortly afterwards, while hiding in a rubbish heap. Ho had made several, previous attempts to-escape from various gaols. ■".. At the Police Court, William Whittley, alias George Clifford, pleaded guilty to four different charges of stealing bicycles, and was remanded to the Supremo Court for sentence: ■■The bicycles had been left standing about-''''streets or rights-of-way, and were taken ■ by accused and -disposed of to pawnbrokers, and bicycle shops. At the 'Compensation Court the hearing of the Hon. Roudal for compensation for the taking dt the Te Arai estate by'the Government was finished. .The decision was reserved. The case of tho lessee, John Clark, was then' taken. Mr. Clark claims £10 ; 000 for ■ loss ot the lease and £2000 special loss for navirig to sell cattle at an inopportune time.'. . ~ ' the new tariff.. ; Invercargill, October 31. The coming into operation of the new tariff to-morrow has caused something of a flutter in Customs work. The principal changes are in regard to sugar, dried fruits, and boots and shoes. The reduction in duties on the first two has caused the,importer to allow stocks to fall as 1 low as possible in order'to escape,the heavier duties under the old tariff. Boot importers, on the other hand, have cleared heavily. Sugar could not be bought in any quantity in town to-day, and some'merchants had sold every grain in store. Several wholesale, dealers' in dried fruits, to avoid having heavy stocks on hand at the old duty rates, shipped goods to Melbourne and back, and have thus evaded duties. PRICE OF FLOUR. Duneain, October 31. The prieo of flour advanced to-day, by £1 per ton,, and the Dunedin quotation for slicks H now ,-Cl-l us. NEWS IN BRIEF. Invercas-gill, October 31. Tho Magistrate gave judgment to-day in a case in which Francisco Sambolino sued W. S. Watorston for £23 10s. Hid., for wages, etc., in connection with the stay of the barque Stefano Razetto at the Bluff. Judgment went for plaintiff for £23 Bs. 4d., with £4 4s. costs. Stay of execution was refused.
