Shortly after 5 p.m., yesterday, tho staff,ol Messrs Sarg'ood, Son, ami Kxvons-local warehouse, assembled at the Commercial Travellers Club, in Victoria Street, to do honour to ; Mr. T W. Witt, who has been in tho service of tlic firm, fpr soino twenty-eight years, tho greater part of that time as head of tho fancy roods department. '»l.r. Jj. U. 'iewsiuy, tno local manager, after eulogising Mr. Witt and rot'en'ing to tho ''faithful 'service ho had rendered for bo many years,. presented him, on behalf of the staff, with a very handsome gold locket pendant, and nt the same time handed him a pretty gold brooch, set with'diamonds, Vor-Mrs.'\V'nt. ! -nnd..a (substantial cheque Iraiu the firm, with the wish that he.would have the best of hick for the future, which must happen if ho attended to his business-as well as he' ahd the firm's.: Messrs J. A. (J. M'Eldownoy, T. L. Austin, J. Philpott, and H. Uphain, all' old servants of Sargood's, also spake in praise of Mr. Witt's ability.and uniform courtesy, and Mr.' Witt replied in suitable terms. His health and that of the firm wcro enthusiastically honoured before' tho gathering dispersed. Mr. Witt intends 'to take a holiday before entering v into business on his own account in Wellington. •
